SACRAMENTO — The Golden State Killer raped and murdered victims all across the state of California in an era before Google searches and social media, a time when the police relied on shoe leather, not cellphone records or big data.
But it was technology that got him. The suspect, Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, was arrested by the police on Tuesday. Investigators accuse him of committing more than 50 rapes and 12 murders.
Investigators used DNA from crime scenes and plugged that genetic profile into a commercial online genealogy database. They found distant relatives of Mr. DeAngelo’s and traced their DNA to him.

Not long ago, several sites admitted they were adding a percentage of black DNA to the results just to mess with people.
Waste of money in my opinion.
Exchange blood for guns in this example. “You can have your guns, and if you have no murderous intent with them, you should have no problem entering their serial numbers into a database.”

This is even creepier than Facebook, in that your relatives can register you.
They used techniques adoptees use every day to find birth parents. Every. Single. Day.
Ancestry just provides the databases for constructing the mirror trees. Actually ancestry had no part. You can’t upload raw data to them. The police uploaded to gedmatch, and used the closest match to construct the mirror trer

I found out what happened to my husband’s missing grandfather. We found a love child of a cousin no one knew about. And of course the biggest surprise was me. I matched a 1st cousin. That match proved my birth mother. Found my birth father through a 3rd cousin match.
Precisely. That is coming. The Ancestry DNA analysis doesn't probe health issues. The 23 and Me version does. On purpose. Part of the "service". Part of the hazard too.

Cyrogenically preserve everyone’s head for 75 to 100 years. If there are no indications of misdeeds then allow the heads to remain frozen until the brains can me reanimated onto a futuristic robot to live again!
If there is a troubled past send the offenders heads to the landfill.

Depends on the service. Ancestry gives you an ethnicity “estimate” which varies person to person. Keep in mind migrations and that ethnicity and nationality are 2 very different things.
You also get a list of other users who match to you. These can range from parent/child to distant cousin. This is the service that is spot on accurate and of most use to those persons looking for family. I found my birth father. I verified my birth mother. Neither of them were required to test, it was done triangulating the matches. Well, actually I got a 1st cousin match on maternal side, so that required little further work. Of course, once I made contact I did verify my none id info with them.
I know two people who found very close relatives through Ancestry.
One of them signed up and a woman emailed him saying she was a 1st cousin. So he emailed his 5 uncles about it. They all got mad at him saying he sent an inappropriate email. LOL Not sure what happened after that.
I think some people here don’t understand satire.
It happens quite frequently. Chickens are coming home to roost, so to speak, people are finding out about secrets and lies. They can deny all they want, but the DNA speaks for itself.
As for myself and my husband, the results were spot on,and he’s truly a Heinz 57. Father was Mexican and mother was from Oklahoma. Iberian peninsula, Italian/greek,native American, and Irish and white Anglo. Myself I’m 1/4 Czech, potato famine Irish, and the usual white Anglo. But keep in migration, invading armies, informal adoption, and sanchos in the wood pile.
