Break-up of California moves a step closer as billionaire gets enough signatures to trigger vote

The chance of California splitting into three has moved a step closer after a billionaire secured enough signatures to trigger a referendum on the issue.

Tim Draper, who made his money through Hotmail and Skype, has gathered 600,000 signatures supporting the change – way above the 364,000 needed.

Those who want to break up California believe it would boost educational standards and reduce the political power of Sacramento, the state’s capital.

Providing the state authorities agree the signatures are genuine a referendum on the issue will be held this November alongside other mid-term elections.

Their current representation is based on the whole. If they split into 3, they should lose representation until the 3 hold their own special elections for new representation. Those seats are based on their (presumably 'legal')populations. It would be tough for me to accept any increase in their total representatives, only a shifting of the sands and hopefully some of that sand is of the red variety.

If I get time I'd like to go back and read some old stuff on the Virginia/West 'By God' Virginia split. Some history may be trying to repeat here. I don't want to be caught looking forward when I should be looking over my shoulder.

It’s many of the big population centers in nearly every state which have become leftist cesspools.

There is a County map floating around here, I'm sure you've seen it, the USA is red with pockets of blue almost exclusively based around our cities.

Your map makes more sense than three. Although I would add a good share of Oregon to Bigfoot and rename it JEFFERSON. Rump Oregon should be split into two and joint with eastern and western Washington, respectively.

There are several states like that - one way to fix is instead of the whole state electoral votes going for one candidate, have it go by county or section so at least the more rural part of the state would have some say in their government.

In other words, apportion out the electoral votes to more than one candidate. So many states have one huge city that overrides the rest of the entire state! Washington, Oregon, New York, California

Because the state is so huge and populated, it has 55 electoral votes. I think it needs to be spread out. If we cut it in chunks with smaller electoral votes, at least California wouldn’t have such a huge say in the Presidential race. However, I never thought about that - potentially 6 Senators but they would not necessarily be all blue. As devoted as some liberals are, they would move to the red part of the state to turn it blue so you may have a good point there.

I wonder if the Owens Valley will be included in a red state?

It would be a real shame for LA to have their water in hostile hands.

Don’t just split Washington. Recombine Oregon and Washingtion into Washegon and TransCascadia.

Id like to see the New North California cut off all the water to South California ( aka Baja California del Norte). Hollywood and Beverly Hills with empty pools and brown lawns!

I wonder if the other states will admit them to the Union.

Or other possible outcomes.

They have the entire Pacific Ocean at their doorstep!

Why do they not have desalinization plants all up and down the coast?

They should have more water than they know what to do with!...................................

It’d Be easy to split California into two radically different entities.

Draw a line starting at the northern boundary of Orange County. Go along the coastline about 50 miles deep. Stop just north of Oakland. You’d have one Leftist cesspit with a few wealthy areas + a ton of homeless, leeches, illegals, etc. The other would be the agricultural heartland + fairly conservative Orange County and San Diego ie you’d have a still pretty large red state.
