Cynthia Nixon's answer to a question that has perplexed New Yorkers for generations is turning heads on social media.
Nixon, the Sex and the City actor challenging Gov. Andrew Cuomo, was asked by The New York Times Magazine where she believes upstate New York begins, a query that regularly sparks fierce debate — and a wide-ranging array of responses — on Twitter and Facebook.
Her answer? Somewhere near Ithaca.
"I don't think the Hudson Valley is upstate," Nixon said, according to the Times. "Once you get to Ithaca, by around there, you're starting to get upstate."

In as much as there’s no official definition of the expression “upstate New York, I think her definition is as good as anyone’s. I’m inclined to agree with her. I certainly don’t think the Hudson Valley region is “upstate.” It’s definitely more associated with NYC in my estimation. Long Island is part of NYC as far as I’m concerned. Amy Fisher, Joel Rifkin, Joey Buttafuoco. NYC for sure. Heh heh.
Upstate NY begins around West Point.

Everything below that is Downstate.
Number 1, its good to see Andrew Cuomo getting some grief. If he has to burn through some of his campaign war chest because of her, great. She is bringing up the corruption angle. Cuomo is neck deep in corruption. Who knows, maybe it will wound him enough to allow a republican to win (yeah, the crack is particulary fine this time of year). Anyway, Cuomo wants to be president. Whatever muck she rakes up will be ammunition for the republicans.
Yeah, I'd say by the time you get to where there are warnings about not swimming in the river because you can get sucked over Niagara Falls, you're probably in Upstate NY.
So, Tonawanda is downstate?
Upstate is everything north and west of Rockland and Westchester counties.
LOL, it’s anything north of the GW Bridge.
Anything above the Tappan Zee Bridge is upstate
