As far as I was concerned once you crossed the Tappan Zee you were in the wilds of upstate NY.
If one discounts the northern foothills (as I do) then you can decide if the finger lakes which are mainly in the zone I picked are fully in the zone then Ithaca is right on the edge at the bottom tip of one of the fingers.
Upstate is less a place anymore than a state of mind. If you want government the hell off your back and you’re not demanding your neighbors pay for your lifestyle, you’re Upstate. No matter where I go, I’m Upstate.
I was in Binghampton years ago and it seemed like a sad, worn out ghetto.
I was amazed that the supermarket had a barrier to prevent shopping carts from exiting the store. Not the parking lot mind you, but the store itself.
