To Answer Assad's Latest Atrocity, Trump Should Go No-Fly
New York Post ^ | April 9, 2018 | NY Post editorial board

President Trump was instantly tweeting tough about Bashar al-Assad’s latest atrocity, the gassing of civilians in rebel-held Eastern Ghouta. But America’s response this time should be more than Trump’s answer to Assad’s use of chemical weapons a year ago.

It’s time for Washington to declare a no-fly zone in Syria east of the Euphrates, the region Trump freed from ISIS occupation. Assad and his Russian and Iranian allies don’t deserve to win the fruits of America’s war there, nor should Turkey be allowed to take its insane vendetta against the Kurds into an area the Trump administration liberated.

If America pulls out, as Trump suggested earlier in the month, the forces who helped defeat ISIS and the civilians they now protect will be at the mercy of thugs just as brutal.

Part of the leaked information from the Revolutionary Guard was that Iran greatly feared its nuclear facilities were going to be attacked by the U.S., using Azerbaijan as a base, so maybe the leaked info was correct. It would not be surprising if they knew more than we do about our own country’s plans, because our president keeps his cards pretty close and has often spoken about how foolish it is to warn your enemy ahead of time.

My own guess is that no one had any clear idea that we were building 20 bases in Syria and had 2,000 troops there and effectively held 30% of the land area until very recently. Then came the twitter and email storm from the mindless pacifists, and Trump had to say he was planning on having us leave “soon.” His advisers and the Saudis and many others warned him off doing such a thing.

Recording of the radio communications of the commander of the Syrian armed forces, Brigadier General Suheil Al-Hassan, giving the order to attack the city of Duma “with all available means and all types of weapons” is already online. That was the order that was followed by a Syrian Air Force helicopter dropping the nerve gas two days ago!

Haven't found the actual recording yet. This was on Facebook from Amir.

Disinformation is great isn’t it. No one really knows what he going to do, especially the press. Many on this forum don’t see what is really going on. Syria is an absolute key for Putin in his plans for eastern Europe. The reason that Turkey, Iran and Russia have signed a mutual pact (last week) is because they would have a defensive arch all the way from Lebanon to Afghanistan. This would effectively neuter NATO by forcing the US to expend resources to counter the move and unable to defend Eastern Europe. It was no accident that the gas attack occurred 3 days after Putin, Erdogan, and Rouhani met. The Deal was that Turkey and Iran get to carve Syria up and put them in a position to threaten Israel. If Trump does not react, then the balance of power would be lost for decades. Of course, China would take advantage of us in the South China Sea. No one wants war, but if the US lets it happen they will soon not be able to even defend themselves. Just like what happened in 1940.

US central command is preparing for a strike.
**********************************************
In addition to USS Donald Cook sailing close to the Syrian coastline, a boeing C-135V reconnaissance aircraft from the 55th wing of the USAF was seen above the coast of Syria gathering and sending live intel for the commanders in preparation for a soon strike.
In addition 2 F-15E fighter jets of the 48th wing stationed in Great Britain were seen flying above Cyprus.

“NY Post urges full military confrontation against Russia, including the release of nuclear devices!”

You see, shooting down Russian MiGs to enforce a “No Fly Zone” is the same as wanting global thermonuclear war.

Nothing worth defending in Syria? Syria the home of ancient Christianity? The home of Damascus where Christians were first called "Christians"?

Assad and his father gave Christians a place they could worship freely -- unlike every other Arab country except Lebanon and Iraq. They didn't do this out of the goodness of their hearts but they did it for their own self-interest. However they did protect Christians

Works fine if as well as Syria you're willing to take on Russia. Who has been invited into Syria. Having already threatened Animal Assad I suppose some strike is necessary to maintain some level of credibility, but a no fly zone is a bit much unless we're up to a serious conflict in the air. Yes, the Russians would probably back down, but need to be prepared that they won't. This really is a European problem.

a better use of air power would be the total destruction of all syrian military headquarters and communications capability

Why would that benefit Israel? They have maintained a mostly peaceful border with Syria for many years. Assad hasn't launched any attacks on Israel, and has not allowed his territory to be used to launch attacks on Israel.

Should Assad lose, and Syria be taken over by any of the fighting groups other than perhaps the Kurdish leftists, the Israel will have a very belligerent state on its border.

Why would Israel want Al Qaeda or some other radical Islamic group to control Syria?

As it is the fighting in Syria has enhanced the role of Iran in the area, certainly not good news for Israel.

And should the situation really spiral out of control, Israel is going to find themselves in the middle of it. That would be a terrible outcome.

Introducing Israel is irrelevant. Israel is not at issue

Why muddy the waters by dragging Israel into the issue?

So some hearsay posted on Facebook is evidence?

You're kidding right? I am sure you can finds dozens of postings on Facebook, Twitter, and even mainstream outlets of all kinds of theories about what happened. None of them are evidence of what really happened.

Haven't you noticed that Israel launched the attack on Syria Monday? They "dragged" themselves into the conflict.

Israel is definitely part of the issue now, their fighter bombers are the planes doing the bombing now.

You misunderstand.

The Israeli attack is not related to the poison gas issue. The IDF attack is related to weapons to be transferred to hezbollah

Trying to distinguish the effects of violence in the long run based on the supposed motivations of the mission planners is foolish. From the point of view of participants in the region, the supposed motivations don't matter.

The bottom line is that increased bombing in Syria by external parties is unlikely to reduce the violence there. And it is possible that actions taken to damage Assad lead to the success of more radical parties who will become a much greater threat to Israel.

Already pushing Assad to enhance his relationship with Iran and invite Iranian military support has had negative implications for Israel.

So basically the NY Post is advocating war. Enforcing a no fly zone means battle.
