South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy (R) urged President Trump to interview with special counsel Robert Mueller in order to help wrap up the Russia probe on Wednesday, arguing the president is "uniquely" qualified to answer many of Mueller's questions.
In an interview with CNN, the chairman of the powerful House Oversight and Government Reform Committee argued that speaking with Mueller is not "risky" for Trump if he has nothing to hide.
"Only he knows what he knows. So I would tell you, if you did not rob a bank there is no reason for you not to sit down and talk with the FBI about the bank robbery," Gowdy said.
"If you have nothing to hide, sit down. Assuming a fair prosecutor, and I think Mueller is, sit down and tell him what you know," Gowdy added. "I think he is uniquely well-positioned to answer some of the questions that not just the special counsel but the American people have."
Gowdy's remarks come after a Washington Post report Tuesday night revealed that Trump was not the "target" of Mueller's investigation but rather the "subject," a distinction that Gowdy, a former federal prosecutor, said is "meaningless" to him but means a great deal more to the FBI.
"I don't think those terms, target versus subject...the only word that matters to me in the criminal justice system is defendant," Gowdy said. "So if you're not the defendant, whether you're the target or the subject, I know the FBI gets really caught up in those two words, [but] as a former federal prosecutor they're meaningless to me."

Had the same thoughts re Gowdy/ Benghazi. Also many of these swamp creatures now not running for office again as they know the club has been exposed and this suggestion by Gowdy is his insurance policy with them that he is one of them and will play their little game
Gowdy, like all lawyers, know they are able to twist words to mean what they say they means, not what their subjects are trying to say.
They love perjury traps!
Worse, Mueller has far too many actions that need explaining to believe hes the standup guy Gowdy believes him to be!
Go back to your courtroom career, Trey. We had such high hopes for you.. go write your books and give us a rest.. and take Ryan with you.
Way.
Agreed. At the very least it would give Mueller a measure of credibility.
When did Gowdy lose all his fricking brains? Has he always been this stupid?
Gowdy is such a disappointment. This is self serving advice that is absolutely wrong. POTUS has denied the allegations of collusion. No reason to offer an opportunity to twist his words & provoke a misstatement.
That makes sense. Gowdy’s attempt to sabotage Trump is painfully transparent. But your motive makes more sense than the one I suggested.
Any competent attorney will (privately) tell you not to talk to the cops and prosecutors because they can bend the info to get you, even if innocent. This is especially true for the FBI, which has the “lying to the FBI” crime. Think of poor Flynn.

Only if he gets the same terms as Hillary. Not under oath and no notes. Anything else is asking for trouble. I'm not sure Trump can stick to the facts long enough to get through it.
Gowdy started out all bluster.
He talks a good game when he's grilling people in hearings but nothing ever comes out of Congress because it it a political body, not a judicial body.
So Gowdy never had any clout. The Benghazi hearings especially were a big dud. All hat but no horse.
But lately Gowdy has sounded more like a unipartier than a Republican.
Looks to me, like someone "got" to him and he's backing down and leaving congress.
Trump should absolutely not meet with Mueller, regardless of whether he has anything to hide or not.
Unless Donald has something up his sleeve like a scheme to trap Mueller, which he's not telegraphing, he should avoid Mueller at all costs.
“I am trying to figure out what Gowdys game is. He is not seeking reelection, he just co-authored a book and he seems to be a Mueller supporter. He must have an end game objective, but as of now, he hasnt played his hand. Stay tuned.”
I’m starting to think he was controlled opposition all along or he was recently handed a manila envelope.
I too am a Gowdy fan but this looks to much like a Will you walk into my parlour?’ said the Spider to the Fly.” Scenario.
Dont do it Donald. Best outcome if you do: possibly closing out the Russia Probe a bit earlier, But the worst outcome is at least a Mueller Perjury trap or worse.
Dont do It Donald..
Trump may not have robbed a bank , Gowdy, but he might have jaywalked to get to a bank 15 years ago.
With the timing of his retirement announcement, I was wondering if his name is on that list of Legislators who have benefited form the sexual harrassment payouts. I dont know anything about him, just that the timing was close to the story being revealed.
You can do anything with the right requirements:
All questions in advance.
Trummp’s attorney present.
Beware of “legal” or political advice from Gowdy. SC people often get it wrong in the end.
