KOCHI: Cardinal George Alencherry, who is at the centre of the controversial land deals of the Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese, has said the legal system of the country should not interfere in the Canon laws. Speaking after the Good Friday Mass at the Kokkamangalam St. Thomas Church in Alappuzha, Cardinal Alenchery, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church, said it was the "duty of the citizen to obey the rule of law existing in the country, but more importance should be given to the divine law".
"No one should think divine justice could be measured with the legal system of the country. It is wrong. Even in the Church, such tendencies prevail. There are persons in the Church thinking that they could control it through court verdicts," he said. The cardinal's comments came even as the Supreme Court had recently observed that the charges against the cardinal were of a very serious nature. It made the remarks while declining to vacate the stay granted by the division bench of Kerala High Court in initiating an FIR [First Incident Report] against the cardinal and two other priests in connection with the land deals.

Might agree that the ‘Law of God’ is above the law of the land. But, that is a whole different proposition.

In that direction, Sharia Law lies.
In the supreme ultimate moral and spiritual sense yes G-d above secular law. But in the practical sense, meanwhile as far as society and government, secular law is what we follow as much as we must follow secular law. We may morally & spiritual take our lumps for not following secular law. That does not remove us from taking those lumps, it only makes our statement before G-d about which law we see as higher.
Badly written article, not even sure where this guy is from. But I think what he is saying is that all authority originates from God. God tells us in the Bible to obey the laws of man, however govt have a duty to God to ensure that the laws they create are just and not counter to Gods laws. Not all govt law is just, but those who make and enforce unjust laws will ultimately have to answer for that, in this world or the next.
