Another fiscally ruinous entitlement is the last thing America needs.

The recent bipartisan budget agreement, which indicates that ten-digit deficits are acceptable to both parties even when the economy is robust, indicates government

In Germany this comes with the territory as it is "baked into your taxes". Nice to have if you have a child!

But, the problem, IMHO is that taxes are so high that couples choose not to have a family. Because they cannot afford to have and raise a child.

Sort of the reverse of the "chicken and egg" riddle.

I don’t like government giveaways. However, if the US were to end ALL immigration from any country for any reason, for 50 years, then perhaps I would consider the benefits of giving Americans paid leave to help them have more native born children. That might be an exceptable trade-off.

Rubio sounds like a democrat here. All this does is encourage low wage workers to pop out kids with paid leave and then paid daycare to follow.

No, it wouldnt. :-)

Want folks to have more kids? Let them keep more of their own money. Then maybe one parent can afford to stay home full time.

The worst is the child care credit that Ivanka got into the tax bill. That provides yet another incentive for mothers of young children to go to work, when we know that children do better home with a parent.

And of course it is skewed to primarily aid the likes of Ivanka’s Manhattan friends who pay massive amounts for multiple nannies, etc.

Why on earth would we want to subsidize that?

Then it comes down to “Who gets leave?”. Eventually it becomes free money just for voting.

I know who will pay for it. Me. Along with the ever shrinking number of producers who are bearing the ever increasing tax burden to support the ever increasing number of freeloaders and the government handouts that suppprt them

The Vampire State already has it. Half pay to bond with a kid or care for a close relative.

My thoughts as a former Personnel Manager in the old days:

1. If I could do without the services of an employee for a lengthy maternity leave (mother or father),I could do without his/services.

2. I have invested in this person with training and experience and am being forced to hire someone else to do the work - no thank you!

3. In hiring, women of child bearing age are often passed over for the reasons cited above. It’s just a factor of life.

4. If companies were not watching the bottom line, they wouldn’t be in business and there would be no work to offer.

the problem, IMHO is that taxes are so high that couples choose not to have a family. Because they cannot afford to have and raise a child.

It ain't just taxes. It's taxes AND wages AND costs. I know no one likes to think about the fraction of US wealth that is skimmed off by elites who do very well while not doing much at all except living off of legally imposed "rents," because it smacks of socialism - but what it really is is crony capitalism in socialist clothing [yes they figured out they can fool both liberals and conservatives with this line - oh it's free market capitalism, but we do support the environment - SUCKA!]

If owners and bosses had to pay "free market" rates for labor that would fix it, but we don't because of easy immigration.

It's a complex problem without easy answers, but one answer can't be the view of too many on this forum - just tell natural born Americans to put off having the next generation until they can afford it. When is that in this Zucked up Schmidthole of a Bushleague country? Take that stance and there won't be much in the way of natural born Americans left. We will be Venezuela.

wouldn’t have to have family leave if the darned taxes weren’t so high. Paying taxes for every one else’s child and other waste makes a family poor.

IF a couple ‘suffers from economic insecurity’, as Rubio calls it, then they should have more restraint about ‘adding to their family’ until they are more stable economically.

Expecting others to pay for their ‘family leave’ time is just plain wrong. Adding that financial burden to your employer could be putting that business owner into the financial setting of him or her NOT being able to afford to have their kids.

There’s a thought-—a woman owning & running a company gets pregnant-—WHO pays for her family leave?

Hard enough to own a business anywhere in the world. Such an owner should not have to try & budget way into the future to cover paying for an employee who isn’t there for a fair chunk of time.

You want to have a kid? So be it. But DO NOT expect any business owner to pay for it.

Ultimately, the customer pays for those costs....but the owner is crippled with one staff member being gone.

IF I hve 10 employees & 1 or 2 of them get pregnant, and take family leave, then am I over staffed to begin with? Can I run the company without them?

I would be seriously thinking about restructuring & downsizing.......with older persons beyond child bearing years....

Another kid means another deduction.........They can keep more $$$ that way.

NOT fair to force those who never have kids to work harder to make up for your absence or for bonus pay for all to be reduced to cover ‘family leave’ for only some.

You touch on a few important points here:

1. Nobody is actually going to "pay" for this. Instead, they'll pay indirectly through reduced pay and employment opportunities as the whole culture of full-time employment for Americans disappears. Forcing employers to incorporate productivity drains in their operations is going to be a huge incentive to simply stop hiring full-time workers.

2. I read somewhere that the Family & Medical Leave Act has pretty much been a failure because so few people take advantage of it. Government cannot change reality for a competitive business.

3. Is it any coincidence that countries with these stupid employer-paid mandates have seen their birth rates DECLINE after imposing these things?
