The Atlanta Chief of Police said her officers will no longer respond to shoplifting calls at stores in Buckhead.
Erika Shields said staff shortages, in excess of 300 officers, has forced her to reevaluate how to deploy officers. In the affluent section north of downtown, Shields said, the APD Zone Two officers frequently get calls from merchants to do a report on a shoplifter who has been caught by store security. After filling out the paperwork, the officer then must arrange a transport to the Atlanta City Jail in downtown.
All that can take up to an hour and a half to complete. The chief believes that time can be better spent by having those officers handle serious crimes, from burglaries to carjackings.
Shields said if a shoplifting takes place, the larceny can still be reported and will be counted in the APD stats. The chief puts the onus on the merchant to file the incident and, if necessary, spend the funds to hire an off-duty Atlanta or metro officer who can make the sure the culprit is made to pay for his crime.
A Buckhead resident and community leader, Roslyn Smith, is "disappointed" the city is in the position where staff shortages is leaving the chief with such a choice.
"Personally, I am not going to feel comfortable going to shop," Smith said.
As for filling the gap in manpower, Chief Shields said, a pay study is being prepared that she will present to Mayor Keisha Bottoms in the hopes of making her officers among the highest salaried law enforcement in the area.

My other thought is that responding to shoplifting calls is racist.
That's one way to lower crime statistics. Don't arrest anyone. Just like Obama had the Florida Schools do. Worked out well for the 17 dead kids, didn't it ?
Nailed it. What you wanna bet that 95 percent of the shoplifters were black?
So to reduce the workload, and clear up them pesky racist crime statistics - they just ignore the crime.

The Atlanta police chief needs to start rehearsing her speech about how there is “nothing that she can do” or how she’s “doing all she can” when crime skyrockets in the Atlanta area because she’s giving up on these so-called “nuisance” crimes. If there is one thing that the Giuliani Administration in NYC taught urban America, is that focusing on the small crimes stops the big crimes.
Just build a holding cell in the middle of the mall.

Police are getting worthless.
Two years ago, my daughter’s home was broken into. She got home in time to see the robbers speed out the driveway and she followed their pickup truck to the robber’s home. She parked across the street and called the police. They told her that since it was a property only offense, they could not come and that she would have to file a claim with her insurance company. This was in Henderson, NV, outside of Las Vegas.
Why have police if they don’t do police work?
I really thought robbery needed to involve police, not just insurance companies.

Why are they singling out Buckhead? Oh, yeah, it’s mostly made up of millionaires who apparently don’t deserve police protection even though they pay taxes out the wazoo.
I admittedly don’t know the law, but it seems like these merchants could file a class-action suit.
Then they just lock your doors with a key you don’t have.
Just call in all shoplifting as “man with a gun”.
“Well, it looked like he had a gun. You know how that is.”
That’s one city I’ll never move to.
Buckhead is the cash register for Atlanta taxes so this is beyond stupid. Many unincorporated areas of Georgia are becoming cities on their own, I recommend it for Buckhead.
It’s simple. She’s telling the homies, to go on and steal from the White folks in Buckhead, because the Cops won’t respond.
Maybe it’s unfair but every time a city goes into the toilet by crime the face of the police department is a cop with eight stars and usually a woman (who looks like a lesbian). The mayors are usually black. I know it’s racis’ and stereotypical but true. When the police stop policing little things, the “Broken windows” Theory comes into play. I think policing needs to be revisited and what it means in our society. We are veering into anarchy in many parts of America as police are worthless and the right to self defense is not allowed.
For a little while I worked around a bunch of Government employees with badges. The kind that also traveled around the world doing shifty things while wearing body armor and wearing all the tactical gear.
One day they were all talking about the "civilians" and I calmly mentioned they were also civilians. They all looked at me and I straight out told them they were not in the US Military and were civilian law enforcement and should remember such. The senior man look at me and told me I was right.
Is this just like the broward county sheriffs office not responding to disruptive criminal students in their high schools?
When business owners and taxpayers start to believe that they are getting neither return nor protection from the police getting very generous retirements and pensions, things will change. Government unions are a nemesis.
Citizens need the right to have direct control via referendum over the unelected bureaucrats who screw them. As others have said she never should have broadcast such policy, just as schools should not advertise themselves as no defense zones.
simple solution. private armed security.
