The very expensive ($70.9 billion in 2016) federal food stamp program (officially: Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP) is an open invitation to fraud. The latest indicator comes from Jacksonville, Florida.

WUT? No friggin' way. I thought we keep getting told that all "those" stories are just anecdotal and not true. Someone call the fbi. Oh. Never mind. They're busy.

I though Obama was paying for Obamacare and other things by eliminating waste and fraud?

I was asking - if they knew there was waste and fraud why wasnt it ALREADY eliminated?

The article stops with 2015 data. Didn’t food stamps usage drop dramatically last year?

The usage did expand after the 2008 financial crisis. Because people were out of work. Duh.

115 individuals illegally trading their food stamps may be fraud but it really doesn’t sound like a lot. How many committed fraud signing up for the program instead of committing fraud by misusing benefits. And it sounds like it took a lot of police power to catch those few.

Trump has the right approach to reducing food stamp usage. Make jobs available. And once jobs are plentiful, then start examining who is left on the program and why.

Good golly, am I surprised or what?

My thinking is that there is easily $500 Billion a year in waste, fraud and abuse. Conservatively.

Addicts sell EBT ("SNAP") cards at 50 cents on the dollar. And the latest scam is reselling medical supplies, such as diabetic test strips, which were paid for by Medicaid.

There is nothing new about the fraud in the USDA Food Stamp Program.

Refer to Economic and Policy Weekly, December 30, 1995, page A-159. The article is published as follows: Logan, S H and DB DeLoach (1977): The Food Stamp Programme: Del Norte and Humboldt Counties, California Division of Agricultural Sciences, University of California, Davis, Bulletin 860

More stamps being redeemed than were issued. Scamming from the Bay Area used as currency on the North Coast.

There is nothing new under the sun.

It wouldn’t be Food Stamps if it didn’t involve massive fraud. Hell, Obama’s massive expansion of Food Stamps wasn’t technically considered “fraud” but the fact that essentially middle class people were getting Food Stamps was de facto fraud.

$500 billion fraud in a program that according to the article costs "($70.9 billion in 2016)"? That's your thinking huh?

In my former life as a business manager for a Fortune 50 Corporation, I would always take over accounts payable immediately upon assuming control of a new account or subsidiary. I ALWAYS saved at least 10%...went straight to the bottom line... sometimes much more.

How many times were we told those stories of fraud are just made up.

Brings to mind how the liberal MSM insists voter fraud, if it exists at all, is minuscule and of no consequence. Which is pure BS ... it does exist, and in numbers that would astonish honest and legitimate voters if they knew the enormity of the problem.

A day in a California supermarket

An old lady skinny as a rail with a jar of instant coffee, a couple of discount tv dinners and a can of condensed milk paying with cash in check out line.

At checkout, a fat Mexican mama in spandex with five kids with a cart load of meat, milk, box cereals, potatoe chips, candy, cookies etc paying with food stamps.( or credit food card). On top of that La Luz hands out free food to the Mexicans. They get more food than they know what to do with.

I see that the price hasn't gone up since the 60’s and 70’s. Food stamps had to be in the book though.
