Two Miramar Police Department SWAT team members, Det. Jeffery Gilbert and Det. Carl Schlosser, were off duty and training at Coral Springs when they learned of the shooting at nearby Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last month, where 17 people were killed.
Instead of treating the two men as heroes, the SWAT's unit commander informed the two men that they had been temporarily suspended from their duties. They were unwanted, you see.
Effective immediately you have been suspended from the SWAT Team until further notice, wrote Capt. Kevin Nosowicz, the units commander, in a Feb. 22 memo obtained by the Miami Herald through a public records request. Please make arrangements with the training department to turn in your SWAT-issued rifle. (Miami Herald)
Pat Franklin, a retired Miami Beach police detective, offered further explanation for the disciplinary action.
"You dont want to let those guys loose into something thats chaotic where they might take inappropriate action," he noted. "It is prudent to have them stand down unless there is a plan.

I’d like to hear more details about this story.
Were the off duty SWAT team members part of the group of Coral Springs police who responded?
When did they arrive and what did they do once they were on scene?
Thanks
This world is really a mess. Police trying to be heroes and save kids get suspended, cowards keep their job and pensions at the FBI and Broward Co, and the NRA is the one at fault, killer is a Dem, but Republicans have blood on their hands is the meme. I can’t even describe how I feel anymore.
They did.
The guys at the Corral Springs police department that they had been training with knew they were there.
Or do you mean they should have called up their boss in Miami.
"Hey captain, there is a active school shooting going on. Should we help or just sit here playing with ourselves like you do?"
I thought the SWAT training pretty much assumed the plan was to protect civilian life and neutralize any threat.
You state the problem plainly, the problem is the lock on the minds of the middle and the left that the mainstream media still have. Online memes are very effective with younger people who pay attention to such things, and you’ve laid out the basis for several. They can be quite simple but devastating when in wide circulation. For instance, create a JPEG with an online meme generator. Photo of the killer, Cruz. Below, bold all cap headline: DEMOCRAT. Below that, smaller text, just as you wrote it: “... but Republicans have blood on their hands?” The simpler and more ironic the better, just lay out the hypocrisy. Then start posting it, welcome others picking it up. With any luck it’ll go viral. That’s one of the few ways around the chokehold of the MSM. Trump’s a master at it, unusual for an old dude but he is, and it can happen.
FYI. There is more than one police department in Florida. There are also multiple sheriff’s departments. We are just chock full of counties down this way.
It just keeps getting better. How many times and ways can government screw up?? To infinity, I guess.
Actually yes. They have a duty to notify their command where they are headed to. It’s a 10 second call over the radio or cell. They needed to let Miramar PD know they were responding. You can’t just freelance, it’ll be chaos.
No. They were Miramar PD officers, training in Coral Springs, probably some kind of joint swat task force training. I can’t answer the other question.
Well, eventually the shooter will run out of bullets, they nab him, and everyone goes home safe. Except the victims, of course.

Bull.
You cant just freelance, itll be chaos.
So responding to a call of "active shooter" with the guys you where training with is "free lancing".
Congratulations.
That is the dumbest thing I have heard today.
But the day is young.
I don't...
I understand the mentality of rushing to the sound of gunfire, but on 9/11, we had fire companies from all over the city rushing to the trade center without being dispatched or approved by Battalion. We also had PD officers doing the same. Had their been a follow on attack or a secondary device or attack, we would not have been adequately able to respond to the second scene. Consequentially, we had multiple mos killed standing in a staging area, that they didnt need to be in.
Didn't happen...And in no one's wildest imagination would those buildings fall down...And since Columbine, police depts. across the Nation have been training for incidents like the one in Fla., so they say...
From the performance of the BCSO, these SWAT officers could have been the victims of a blue on blue shooting had they rolled up in plainclothes with AR-15s locked and loaded.
I suspect from the years of training these SWAT members have gone thru, those scenarios have been covered extensively...
The kops apparently were waiting for the shooting to stop, hoping the killer ran out of ammo or killed himself...The top priority is that those guys in blue/green make it home safely after the fact...
What's interesting is that this crazed killer knew enough to stop shooting and remove his garb and blend in with the crowd before any cops showed up in the building...
When was out ever okay to respond without calling in simultaneously at least. Not doing so is a way to get ambushed, set-up, or disappear with no back-up underway.
Usually happens to rookies and cowboy cops.
“Actually yes. They have a duty to notify their command where they are headed to. Its a 10 second call over the radio or cell. “
The problem is that there are dozens of people making that 10 second radio call and the people actually at the scene can’t get on the air. In the real world of policing, when a giant event like this pops, you shut up and go. Also, for at least two decades the “command” miles away cannot be the decision makers. That falls to the highest ranking person AT THE SCENE.
Fwiw, want one or not, she and we have waited a long time for an answer to that question, and, if the rumors are true, I suspect that answer is well on its way!
Good things come to those who wait and Justice is a very, very good thing, indeed.
What a time to be alive!
That is a heavy duty example of police thinking of the “east coast” philosophy.
“I suspect from the years of training these SWAT members have gone thru, those scenarios have been covered extensively...”
It’s very well known that the uniformed guy makes the rules, the plainclothes guy had always damn well better do what the uniformed guy says.
“Didn’t happen...And in no one’s wildest imagination would those buildings fall down...And since Columbine, police depts. across the Nation have been training for incidents like the one in Fla., so they say...”
What didn’t happen? I can tell you from first hand personal knowledge that units did respond from the Trade Center from areas outside of Manhattan without being dispatched. Also, the reason that NYPD only lost 27 officers, was that the NYPD aviation units were reporting structural issues with the building to the CP on the ground before the collapse and PD moved MOS away from the site. I am certainly not defending BCSO’s performance, but you just can’t have cops from neighboring jurisdictions rolling in without their commands knowing. Supposing one of these SWAT operators were wounded and unable to communicate, how would Miramar get them help?
