The Florida Senate rejected a proposal to ban assault weapons, and voted for a measure to arm some teachers, weeks after 17 people were killed in the deadliest high school shooting in U.S. history.
An amendment that would have banned assault weapons attached to a wider bill failed on Saturday in a largely party-line vote, in response to the Feb. 14 killing of 14 students and three faculty at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in the Fort Lauderdale suburb of Parkland.
The vote was 20-17 against the assault weapon ban, with two Republicans joining all of the senates 15 Democrats in support of the proposal, the Miami Herald reported.
The full bill, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act, is expected to pass the state Senate on Monday, then go to the Florida House.
After the Senate rejected the ban, Stoneman Douglas student Jaclyn Corin tweeted,This breaks my heart, but we will NOT let this ruin our movement. This is for the kids.
Fellow classmate David Hogg, who has become one of the schools leading activists on gun safety, tweeted,Elections are going to be fun!
Also, an amendment to remove a provision to train and arm some teachers failed.
The bill raises the minimum age to buy a rifle or a shotgun to 21 from 18 and bans the use, sale or possession of bump stocks, which were used in the Oct. 1 shooting deaths of 58 people in Las Vegas. The device effectively turns semi-automatic weapons into automatics.
The bill includes $400 million in funding for schools to address mental health issues, the Herald reported.

Well, we can applaud arming teachers, but . . .
<>The bill raises the minimum age to buy a rifle or a shotgun to 21 from 18 . . . <>
The senate apparently regards the natural right to defend oneself as a political right, as if self-defense requires the judgement associated with a minimum age to vote.
NFA 34?
Fantastic! The left wing demogogues lost out to common sense and our constitution. For a change.

Spot on.
Leftist FAIL!!!
Politicians go wild when its "for the children."
BTW, did anybody ask Broward Sheriff Know-nothing if his $750 million dollars PD budget had any funds for that?
Seeing as how the simpleton screwed-up the schools.......
The sheriff is getting plenty of federal funds handed out by Obama to those like Sheriff Suck-up who knelt in obeisance to Obama's cockamamie plan to eliminate minority criminal statistics......which enabled the massacre to take place.
What an insufferable little jerk that kid is.
The Broward cops hid outside while 17 kids got slaughtered and many injured .....as shots rang out, kids screamed and bodies fell.
These Broward pansies with perks hid b/c they had orders:
<><>(A) to adhere to federal/state-approved OBAMA-ERA PROGRESSIVE SCHOOL POLICY,
<><>to make sure NOBODY was caught, and,
<><>(C) that nobody got arrested.......
<><>(D) b/c an arrest statistic would turn off the federal money spigot.
Not okay with either of those. Maybe I was too general in my comment.
Personally I believe that there should be no rules on gun ownership. It’s not the possession that causes trouble, it’s the misuse. I think a parent should be able to give a 14 yr old a gun if they are responsible and supervised like it used to be. Gun laws only make criminals out of otherwise law abiding people.
If I owned a rifle, shotgun, machine gun or a howitzer, it’s not the government’s business unless I misuse it.

My goodness. Common Sense.
I thought it had died under Obama.
I don't know what the law regarding minimum age was when and where I grew up.
Or if there even was a law.
And I doubt hardly any parents knew or cared.
Just about every young boy I grew up with had a .22 or open access to one as a pre-teen or in their early teens.
We used to walk right down the main street of the village with our rifles on the way to the town dump to shoot rats and no one even gave us a second look.
It was that common.
And I never knew of, or heard of, even one incident of intentional abuse or endangerment with a firearm by a village youth.
No those are the people they plan on arming.

Gun safety? What did he do? Join the NRA?
I can’t believe that the vote was that close!
Damn, I have 10 acres in Okeechobee that I plan to move to from New Hampshire. If Florida does pass some type of ban, I’ll be forced to sell my property and stay and freeze in NH. At least NH has no restrictions and defers all firearms laws to the federal level, but we are at least a Constitutional Carry state.
Yes please.
Yes. Elections will be ‘fun,’ Mr. Hogg. With distance from the event, people will be less likely to be stampeded into voting for something wrong-headed. And the iniquity of Sheriff Israel will be fully known and revealed. All due respect, but this is not about you or your fellow surviving classmates. It’s about stopping the next shooter. You are in pain, but that does not mean you are right.
“...Elections are going to be fun......”
This kid is a real little Drama Queen, ain’t he... Or maybe Crisis Actor is a better term.
“...make us defenseless against bad guys and the government....”
One has to wonder - and not too hard at that - about what the democrats have in store for us that they want us disarmed so badly.
Hint: Think Mao, Pol Pot, Hitler, Stalin, Che, Castro...
Just sayin’, all kindasortahypothetical-like, you understand...
“Thats the way to do it. Every time the left pushes for gun control, pass laws for gun liberty”.
Right on!!
