President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence met with National Rifle Association officials Thursday night at the White House -- the second time in less than a week that he's had such a meeting.
"Good (Great) meeting in the Oval Office tonight with the NRA!" the president tweeted.
Following the meeting, NRA executive director Chris Cox tweeted, "I had a great meeting tonight with @realDonaldTrump & @VP. We all want safe schools, mental health reform and to keep guns away from dangerous people. POTUS & VPOTUS support the Second Amendment, support strong due process and dont want gun control. #NRA #MAGA."
Trump had a lunch meeting with NRA leaders last Sunday -- including Cox and NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre -- and during a gathering of governors on Monday, he told the lawmakers to not be "afraid" of the group.

Sorry, but you just cant get more counter-factual than that statement. The idea of Trump and/or the Republicans winning elections with gun control is too preposterous to be taken seriously.
He betrayed us.
Benedict Arnold betrayed us too.
I don’t see why we are so hesitant to think he did, but he did. We didn’t sit around for weeks deliberating on whether Benedict Arnold betrayed us, what his long game was, or to understand where he was coming from.
The dude got slighted about being overlooked for positions and status so he went to the enemy and sold us down the river.
I’m not saying Trump is a traitor, but this... he betrayed us.
I’m still happy with him, but on this topic he was in the wrong. I surely hope he does correct this.
But for a moment, Swinestein (I like that name) squeeled with joy and he made her happy. She is our enemy. “Mr and mrs america turn them in” that lifeless, soulless demonic look on her face while she said it still wakes me at night.
These people are our enemy. Making them feel good about something is betrayal. I hate to admit it, but I dusted off my “1 and a half year ago self” this week.
Perhaps, but Im reasonably confident we have enough of our own dumbasses so as not to have to resort to provocateurs for an explanation.
NO ONE is playing Trump.
The Dems are getting played.
Dangerous game if that is what he is doing.
Encouraging!
Exactly. Context is everything.
Judging what came out of this Trump/NRA meeting, Im reasonably confident our President got his ears pinned back and his intemperate comments will die of loneliness rather than being walked back.
It has gone from spectacle to circus. This last week has convinced me that my fears were well founded.
I thought Chris Cox walked them back for him with a tweet?
Thats what Im referring to. I would be very surprised if Trump walked them back from his own mouth. Thats just not how he usually works.
That’s fine by me. I know Trump, and that is how Trump apologizes.
I’m good with that. I can forget him making the comment and move forward. But I still know where he stands on reciprocity, and I will not forget that he said that thing during his campaign and I now know that there is no plan to make that a reality.
I think we can all forgive but none of us will forget.
Wow! You're such a cynic!
If FreeRepublic had a "Like" button, I would've clicked it.
Thanks for a coherent post on this thread!
You and me both. The things keeping him in office over the shadow government is the Military and We the People. He cannot afford to lose either because if this does come to a shooting match against the shadow government and their minions (UN and their military) the President will need us.
This is DACA 2.0
Trump loves to get the Dems to say no to something they want.
I disagree.
They will go a long way to destroy trust in this president, from both sides.
I think if you are a negotiator, when they bring up gun laws, you go to OK, raise the age to 21, but we get ccw reciprocity and the hearing protection act. You don’t start a negotiation by giving up ground, unless you want to lose.
We really have all our eggs in his basket Well said and the 4D chess advocates need to recognize this.
I suspect most of us would agree with Lou Dobbs approach. He doesn't mind trying to persuade the President to keep the trust of his base and supports him 100%. He hates Sessions performance and so do I and I wish Trump had a better strategy to deal with him.
Yep, still hoping for the best and fearing the worst.
