President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence met with National Rifle Association officials Thursday night at the White House -- the second time in less than a week that he's had such a meeting.
"Good (Great) meeting in the Oval Office tonight with the NRA!" the president tweeted.
Following the meeting, NRA executive director Chris Cox tweeted, "I had a great meeting tonight with @realDonaldTrump & @VP. We all want safe schools, mental health reform and to keep guns away from dangerous people. POTUS & VPOTUS support the Second Amendment, support strong due process and don’t want gun control. #NRA #MAGA."
Trump had a lunch meeting with NRA leaders last Sunday -- including Cox and NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre -- and during a gathering of governors on Monday, he told the lawmakers to not be "afraid" of the group.

I’d bet this goes like DACA
1) Trump offers a GREAT deal to liberals (knowing they won’t take it)
2) Dems turn it down because “the resistance” cannot allow Trump to get a “win”.
3) Gun control dies and Dems can’t use it as much as they’d like since they turned down such a good deal.
4) The media moves back to Russia,Russia,Russia or the next Trump scandal.
My gut tells me that the Grabers are getting played. Just like they got played on DACA.

I keep seeing these newbs telling everyone to calm down, and trust Trump is "playing" the opposition, but as you say, no one knows the rules of this chess game, so their confidence amounts to nothing more than wishful thinking.
At the very least, assuming he IS playing the democrats, I'm not exactly comfortable with the level of naked duplicity on Trump's part such a strategy would indicate.
Maybe he had his ears reamed out and found out that a lot of his supporters do want "due process" and like the idea of keeping their guns.
