Almost a dozen people have been injured at a Washington-area military base as a result of a letter that contained a hazardous substance, according to local first-responders.

Hazmat crews rushed to Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall and were trying to identify the substance Tuesday afternoon, according to the Fort Myer Fire Department’s Twitter account.

Initial reports said victims had burning sensations in their eyes and on their hands. Sounds like powdered lye or some such.

It could be completely psychosomatic. Or not. However it is highly unlikely that a biological agent is involved, since the patients presented right away. That doesn’t rule out chemical agents though.

The Feds spent billions in counter terrorism funds to equip and train municipal Hazmat teams, National Guard Civil Support Teams and the Laboratory Response Network to be able to quickly identify these substances, post 9/11. But since nothing has gone boom in the last few years the funds dried up, trainers and trained people retired and government lost interest. Much like civil defense in the era of North Korean and soon, Iranian nukes, we have to relearn and rearm, the hard and expensive way.
