WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The body of evangelist Billy Graham will lie in honor under the U.S. Capitol rotunda next week as Congress pays tribute to a clergyman who counseled presidents and preached the Gospel to millions worldwide, House Speaker Paul Ryan said on Thursday.
Graham, who died at his home near Asheville, North Carolina, on Wednesday at age 99, will arrive at the white-domed Capitol on Feb. 28 and lie in honor there until the following day, Ryan said in a statement.
Members of the public and Capitol Hill community are invited to pay their respects to the late reverend while he lies in rest, the speaker of the House of Representatives said.
Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will take part in a bicameral service when Grahams coffin arrives, the statement said.
A spokeswoman for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association in Charlotte, North Carolina, said by phone that the family had approved a request from McConnell and Ryan for the public tribute.
Graham preached Christianity to more people than anyone else in history during his 70-year career, reaching hundreds of millions of people either in person or via TV and satellite links, his ministry said.

It was really awful - NPR had to get in their digs, too.
G-dless Jerks.
Hope to take a drive down from Jersey next Wednesday. My hope is that thousands and thousands of people from around the US arrive to show their respects not only to honor Billy but also to demonstrate that the only hope of this country is a spiritual awakening. This knowledge was at the heart of Billy’s simple message and what he hoped and prayed for.
Love it .
Simply and beautifully stated.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
“Blessed are those who die in the Lord from now on. ‘Yes’ says the Spirit, ‘for they shall be at rest and their works do follow them.’”
Rev. 14:13
Radical atheists too.
I respected Rev. Graham and watched his crusades on tv was very moving when the altar call came and the music, "Just as I am, I come to thee, but that thy blood was shed for me".
But he lost me the night the cruise missiles started flying on the eve of Gulf War I. I voted for Bush 41, tripped and fell down leaving the polling place, I'm not a person of omens but it felt like one somehow." I had reservations about the war but went along with it.
In announcing the war to the country, the cameras were rolling in the White House. There was Bush 41 and Rev. Billy Graham and some others. It was like trying to show God was putting his stamp of approval on the war or why was he there?
As to all the uncertainties, recent criticisms by liberals, may God have mercy on his soul and decide his destiny in eternity, most assuredly better than mine but I wonder if his longsuffering wife deserved it more.
More souls were probably brought to Christ through his ministry than any other human I can think of. And his message was more on point in many ways than many who have come after him.
An appropriate honor for this Godly man, who influenced millions to come to Christ.
I have a friend whose Dad dies about 3 years ago. He and his 2 brothers had led a rough life although my friend had become a Christian. Each of the brothers said things about their Dad during the service. One brother mentioned something Dad had done that did not go well. He said, “Dad really s.....d the pooch on that one.” I thought, I will never hear that said at a funeral again.
An old mentor of mine died, and his pastor explained how he wasn’t a frequent church-goer, but he was a saint in so many other ways. (And he was).
There was a time for others to say a quick word during the service.
The first guy was a long-time friend and associate.
“Well - I’ve heard Frank called numerous things - but ‘saint’ was never one of them!”
Have been disgusted to see that Drudge has had nothing on its page the past couple of days about Billy Graham, and especially this news.
I thought that only president’s or vice-presidents could lie in state in the Capitol. Am I wrong?
Amen!
Billy Graham will be the third one who lays in honor in the capitol. The other two were
Rosa Parks (1913-2005)
Rosa Parks, an African-American seamstress whose act of civil disobedience in 1955 galvanized the U.S. civil rights movement, was the first woman and the second black American to lie in honor in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol.
Lay in Honor: October 30-31, 2005
U.S. Capitol Police Officer Jacob J. Chestnut, Jr., (19401998) and Detective John M. Gibson (19561998)
Officer Jacob J. Chestnut, Jr., and Detective John M. Gibson, died in the line of duty protecting the U.S. Capitol from an armed assailant. They were the first private citizens to lie in honor in the Capitol Rotunda.
Lay in Honor: July 24, 1998

The only one who should not be allowed to lay in state is that arrogant pos former occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave Barack Hussein 0bama, the worst president ever.
Thank you for always correcting and informing me. Are you a teacher perhaps?
