New: Trump just said he signed a memo directing the Attorney General to propose a rule outlawing bump stocks, all devices "that turn legal weapons into machine guns." He expects those regulations to be finalized "very soon."

I don’t think ATF actually wants to be involved in this. They really can’t ban the things with the law as it stands, and Trump can’t just make law.
Now, ATF might ban them anyway (they’ve done similar before) but it has become clear lately that they really would rather not play in this sandbox.
It’s not a sign.
This was a change in ATF regulations that after a review period, will go into effect soon.
The President is open to other approaches after listening to every one concerned.
Whatever that will be, will be in keeping with his support for the 2nd Amendment.
“Bump stocks allow semi-automatic to simulate an automatic, right?”
Yes, they do, but the rifle itself is still just a semi-automatic. So the notion that the bump stock “turns it into a fully automatic rifle” is not true. The firing mechanism which allows only one round to be expended with each pull of the trigger remains fully functional. I have not used a bump stock, but back in the late 1960’s I worked for a military vendor and had an opportunity to fire an M16. I can’t believe that with the necessity of trigger reset after every pull, that a bump stock can get anywhere near the rate of fire of the fully automatic version (i.e. the M-16)!
“...that turn legal weapons into machine guns.”
Can’t be done unless they redefine what a machine gun is.
Read the comments on this Twitter thread. They are already saying that’s only step one:

But to forgive the pun, he just gave the anti-gunners a lot of ammunition.
He expects those regulations to be finalized “very soon.”
ATF is the “regulator”.
“If this is one of Trumps rope a dopes, fine.
If not, he lost my vote.
I will wait to see what happens.”
Lets not be hasty. Think what it would be like with a democrat in there.
Rope a dope.
Good analogy.
Even though a bump stock was a non factor in last week’s shooting; this “ban” is a signal to the gun grabbers that Trump is serious in “doing something” about mass shootings.
And stuff like that.
Trump needs to learn to keep his mouth shut and not take a position on the issue du jour.
Trump isn’t going to win ONE vote by doing this. They will still hate him, and he’s just pissed off a lot of conservatives.
and no more rubber bands.

Our government overlords have spoken.
“”pre-1986 machine gun”
What happened in ‘86 that prompted this rule? “
Look up Hughes amendment.
Its a change in regulation that doesn’t require congressional approval.
The President also supports stronger background checks, improved security for schools and addressing mental health issues.
All without affecting the RKBA.
The only honest and legal way is to have Congress ban bump stocks.
Does Trump know that according to federal law and the ATF acknowledges that bump stocks are legal?
Who in this federal government really understands why there is a 2nd Amendment?
Are they going to attempt to make, because someone is capable of pulling the trigger at 450 Rounds Per Minute or faster illegal, so they make trigger pulls 25 lbs or higher?
Trump, don’t be fooled by a bunch of foolish children used by the opportunistic Left, who have no wisdom or life experiences to understand history or reasoning. It’s a leftish and totalitarian ad hoc ‘Children’s Crusade’. The original child crusade didn’t end well because of idiot foolishness.
Some hills aren't worth dieing on.
I don’t see it as a rope-a-dope moment. I think he’s wrong.
What I said still stands.
I’m not in the slightest interested in buying a bump stock. To me it’s a very quick way to run through ammo.
Now I can’t and shouldn’t make the choices for everyone. If someone sees value in them, let them have them. I’m all for it.
This issue had died down. Now out of the blue, he did this.
Look, I don’t have to agree with him on everything. You tell me who out there has the moxie to do all the things he’s doing, and believe in many of our causes.
Who else can combat the Leftists like his has? I don’t see a single person even 25% as good on that.
Overall, he’s still very positive when it comes to gun ownership.
There’s no way I’m tossing him overboard on a fringe issue related to one important right.
Bump stocks rank down around 15,000th on my list.
