Gun-grabbing: A modest proposal
americanthinker.com ^ | 2/19/2018 | Don Sucher

On Powerline, John Hinderaker, citing earlier writings of Charles C.W. Cooke, focuses sharply on the desire of the left to end the 2nd Amendment. "Talk is cheap," he tells us – let them actually act. The article then goes to show why such is nearly impossible. Neither American law not the American people would likely tolerate such a thing.

I think both Hinderaker and Cooke are right about that. But still, as in good medicine, might not a trial be allowed to test the hypothesis? A "test case" as it were – one that, in a small way, avoiding many of the larger problems outlined in the two articles, allows us – politicians, their media voices, and most importantly the American people – to see how much "cure" there is in the gun-grabbing idea – and what issues, expected and otherwise, might need to be balanced against any demonstrated efficacy.

In that spirit, I here put forth a modest proposal: that guns already illegal – many of which are even now doing observable harm – be "grabbed" – legally, under present law, or such small modifications of which might pass at least local muster.

Hmmmm. Maybe not such a good plan? Anyone think the courts would jump on this if someone filed a motion as quick as they did on Trump's "travel ban"? I'm thinkin' not. Where is OUR gazillionaire pro 2nd person?

They refuse to use the laws we have, don’t give them new ones to ignore.

A nice idea if the liberals were rational.

When, not if, this “experiment fails, the immediate response from the liberals will be “We failed to account for ... Therefore we need to make it more restrictive and try again.” And again, and again...

Proof of statement?

Look at the great gay marriage “discussion”. How many times did Proposition 8 fail in California before it passed?
And when it finally passed that closed the issue and more discussion was prohibited since it was a closed issue. What? The three (or was if four) previous failures didn’t count once the approved answer was achieved?

Yes, indeed. If lieberals were rational, they’d propose an amendment to the Constitution to abolish the 2nd amendment. Then, after a few years, when it becomes apparent it is not going to pass or be ratified, should they still be rational, they’d drop the idea, and accept the second amendment to the Constitution. It would become the “closed issue” you speak of.

But, alas, they are not rational.

NEVER, under any circumstances give the liberals an opportunity to grab all the guns based on some votes. Look how the demodummie liberals try to steal elections with illegal votes, if you think that was overboard, wait till they get a shot (pun) at taking guns away.

No, it is an EXCELLENT proposal.

For the simple reason that the left would prove their hypocrisy in opposing such activity.

Besides, the politicians would lose their kickbacks from all the criminal activity they allow to persist.

My point is that they are cowards to utilize the legal method to restrict guns, instead resorting to illegal legislative infringements and shopped leftist-judge court rulings.

I’ve not seen much about it, but in New Jersey a suit has been filed by an individual who works high-crime areas without protection, with NRA backing, challenging NJ carry permit procedures as illegally infringing upon our second amendment rights.

I don't think so.

The gun grabbers can piss around doing whatever they do, but leave my RIGHT alone.

I have no interest in playing a game to see what type of infringement I might find acceptable.

Nothing.

Remember how the do-gooder libs snuck in the door with...

"...all we're saying is domestic flights of less than one hour, there will be no smoking. We need to do this for the children..."

From that to no smoking bans in entire cities?

No thanks.

I’d just tell them that, due to the hotly contested nature of this issue, the only way that any deal is possible is if the Dems give up something of equal value: the abortion issue. Not only that, but it has to be in the form of a new Constitutional amendment so as to more or less be permanent.

Of course, they’d reject it. In fact, they’d ridicule the offer. However, it would make them go on record choosing their convenient birth control abortions above the oh-so essential AWB and, according to them, saving lives.

Anti-gun nuts: We must ban all the guns so nobody will be killed.

Logical person: But there are millions of gun owners who say you will have to kill them to take their guns. Is it ok to kill those people, then since that is the only way to accomplish your goal?

Anti-gun nuts: Yes!

This is a terribly misguided suggestion.

It introduces gun confiscation as a reasoned approach.

Oh sure, just the bad ones for now,... of course the list of really bad ones to be expanded in short order.

Anyone stupid enough to fall for this transparent Leftist gun-grab, deserves to be defenseless during a home invasion.
