Trump’s new food-stamps plan: A basket of U.S. food, direct to your doorstep

The White House says the changes could save $214 billion over a decade.

“The Budget proposes to combine the traditional retail-based SNAP electronic benefit with the direct provision of nutritious and 100 percent American-grown USDA Foods to participating households. This cost-effective proposal maintains our commitment to helping needy families avoid hunger while generating substantial savings,” the budget said.

Households receiving $90 per month or more would get a portion in shelf-stable milk, ready to eat cereals, pasta, peanut butter, beans and canned fruit, vegetables, and meat, poultry or fish. The remainder of the benefit would go onto the debit card for use at approved grocery stores.

The average monthly benefit per person was $125.79 last year. To be eligible for food stamps, the maximum gross monthly income is 130% of the federal poverty level, which for a single-person household is $12,140 and $16,460 for a household of two.

The White House adds that it wants to strengthen “the expectation for work among able-bodied adults and preserving the benefits for those most in need.”

Sorry I’m not understanding.
Regarding snap: There is a fraud issue and there is a cultural issue. In some instances the food boxes would go to families that would use them. Other families getting snap are not actually in straitened circumstance or are not accustomed to cooking, many people don’t these days.

The kids in school that don’t like the food as in my example don’t eat if they don’t like the food. That was the disgrace of Michelle Obama and the school lunches. The kids were fainting at school or at after school practices.

One good development is giving these people credit at Farmer’s Markets, but guess what has infiltrated farmers markets? Things like flavored popcorn and nuts and marshmallows. So in theory one could go to a farmers market with a voucher and still buy junk food along with grass-fed steaks, and not go home with a single vegetable.

LIt gives people on welfare/disability a very visceral reason to start earning more money.

Exactly. It is a common sense measure that helps to push people in the direction of responsibility.

People do not like change.

People, however, will be forced to adapt.

This change will change more than simply what people eat. Which is why the progressives hat this idea.

Reminds me of a time a guy asked for gas money. He had a habit of asking for money for something and not using it as he claimed he would so I went to a gas station, bought a 2-1/2 gallon gas container and put 2 gallons in it. Poured it in his tank and left him red-face pissed because he really wanted cigarette money....

Wow, that's quite a monthly income!

Well, it depends. Are those numbers the monthly poverty level, or are they 130% of it?

About 1,000 per month for a single person. Which with few studio apt. being under $ 700, plus utilities around here likely means that most poor with a income of 12,000 have another source, welfare and or share.
