Trump’s new food-stamps plan: A basket of U.S. food, direct to your doorstep

The White House says the changes could save $214 billion over a decade.

“The Budget proposes to combine the traditional retail-based SNAP electronic benefit with the direct provision of nutritious and 100 percent American-grown USDA Foods to participating households. This cost-effective proposal maintains our commitment to helping needy families avoid hunger while generating substantial savings,” the budget said.

Households receiving $90 per month or more would get a portion in shelf-stable milk, ready to eat cereals, pasta, peanut butter, beans and canned fruit, vegetables, and meat, poultry or fish. The remainder of the benefit would go onto the debit card for use at approved grocery stores.

The average monthly benefit per person was $125.79 last year. To be eligible for food stamps, the maximum gross monthly income is 130% of the federal poverty level, which for a single-person household is $12,140 and $16,460 for a household of two.

The White House adds that it wants to strengthen “the expectation for work among able-bodied adults and preserving the benefits for those most in need.”

3 MREs per person per day, picked up in person at a local office. If it’s good enough for our grunts in Kandahar it’s good enough for them. Toss in a voucher good for fresh fruits, vegetables, and dairy.

No more cash equivalents.

Wow, that's quite a monthly income!

I’m more for avoiding them laundering cases of bottled water to get the bottle deposit back in cash.

More like trying to avoid trading food stamp food for drugs after the fact. Some even take people with them to shop.

this could stop the booze/drugs for free food card scams...

it would encourage people stealing other peoples free food...

but think if the concept...actually giving nutricious food to the people instead of a card.....I'm sure the libtards will hate this direct food giveaway...not enough middle men...

My renters on EBT cards buy only the highest quality meat and then sell it at cents on the dollar to buy beer and cigarettes. As far as I can determine, they eat little food, preferring to get their calories from alcohol.

The EBT cards aren’t about food. They could care less about food.

BTW, I am all for it! The price of meat will plummet.

That is a great idea. Once upon a time, prior to food stamps, people would go once or twice a month to local depots to pick up boxes of canned meat, milk, peanut butter, etc. This did two things: not only was it helpful to farmers, but it made the recipients actually cook or figure out what to do with the food (which was healthy, good raw ingredient stuff) rather than filling their cart with snack foods.

OH MY GOSH!

I have been saying this for YEARS now.

I never thought I would see such ideas on a national level.

WOW, Mr. President are truly looking out for all Americans, the Taxpayers, even the people who are receiving this aid.

They will discover to get better things in life you have to earn it.

So. Much. Winning.

All federal welfare programs should be abolished. Give the states a one-time block grant so they can set up or strengthen their own programs, then shut it down at the federal level.

Golden opportunity to shut down the federal government and it's getting pissed away on predictable half-assed measures.

I’m all for it too. BUT what we really need to do is handle foreign aid the same way. Send prefab houses and plants not money. Never send money send the goods made here in America. Boards, nails, hammers all sent as aid and made in America.

“No more cash equivalents.”

Cut off the EBT at Burger King, Subway, Wendy’s, Jack in the Box etc. I know how the scam works. I could count the many times a black guy would approach me in line and ask “hey bro, I’ll give you my card and you buy...”

This is brilliant!

Not only do they get the food they need, they probably get cheaper and healthier food than they might have picked out themselves. They can’t convert the food into other things and fraud the system as readily.

Such a system could conceivably reduce the cost while providing more food to benefit recipients. And it might drive some of the fraudsters out of the system.

They probably need to make allowances for allergies.

Never thought of that.

I LIKE it.

Hell ... if they do that, I'll sign up and I'd probably lose a lot of excess baggage and start chasin' wimmins again !
