They hide income. Dirty little secret is that some groups with “favored nation status” are rubber stamped through these programs and the bureaucrats look the other way. Whereas some little old white lady will be put through the wringer and made to jump through several flaming hoops of administrative red tape only to be denied.

I saw this with my very own eyes.

What happened to the welfare chunks of cheese? Nutritious and they kept the dairymen fat and happy too

“I grew up in a poor household in the 60’s and 70’s, and I still rememebr blocks of government cheese.”

Me too. I remember when Food Stamps were actual stamps. I will never forget the shame on my mother’s face when she used them. She kept meticulous records and when she was back on her feet she wrote checks to the state to pay it back. She actually got a phone call asking her what she was doing and that she didn’t have to pay it back.

It was around 1977 or so I think.

Welfare used to give you a box of grub. Worked just fine. Reintroduce it today? Fine with me! But think how hard something this simple and obvious would be to get they our corrupt congress. it will be opposed by every vested interest group that scarfs up welfare checks. Banks, fast food joynts, cigarette sellers, bars. Liquor stores.distilleries. Groceries. Breweries. sebetting parlors. State lotto operators. Drug dealers. And the DNC. Especially the dnc

Somebody will figure out how to scam it in about 5 minutes, but seems worth a try.

I like it. It totally takes choices away from stupid people to spend stupidly, and it makes it a whole lot harder to trade food money for drugs.

It forces people to be more responsible for themselves if they want something better.

First off, food stamps should only cover staple foods, no goodies. Encourage them to get a job and buy their own food.

Secondly, this is going to put a giant dent in the selling and trading of food stamps by recipients to others, which is long overdue.

>> I have been saying this for YEARS now.

Same here.

If you are poor, chances are close to 99% that it’s because you have made poor choices. Why should you be trusted to magically make intelligent choices about food?

Furthermore, instead of subsidizing farmers for not growing things or not being able to deal with variations in crop yields, the bumper crops could be channelled into this program.

It’s a win-win-win. Taxpayers win, farmers win, kids whose parents used to buy booze with EBT-derived money win.

This reminds me of when the Reagan Administration gave out blocks of cheese to Food Stamp recipients. Soon after the deliveries were made, bars around Philadelphia were serving grilled cheese sandwiches during happy hour.

Dumb idea. Who puts the baskets together? Who purchases the goods? Who delivers them? What happens if the food is stolen? Sounds like a lot of overhead that will eat up any possible cost savings.

I’ve seen people in like use their card to buy gum, get $20 cash back off the card and then go buy cigs. WRONG!

We got commodities and boy could my grandmother cook with them. But yeah, you had to actually cook. After we stopped getting them we had a single lady with 3 kids move in behind us. She got commodities every month. And the day after she got them she would make the best fried chocolate pies for all us kids. 🤗
