Fast-food delivery battles are heating up.
On Thursday, Yum Brands the parent company of KFC, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut announced it had entered into a partnership with delivery company Grubhub. With the deal, KFC and Taco Bell will roll out delivery at thousands of locations across the US in 2018.
McDonald's made a major delivery push in 2017, going from a handful of locations testing delivery to roughly 5,000 locations delivering orders via UberEATS.
Here's how the two fast-food giants delivery strategies measure up.
McDonald's is modernizing and has a huge advantage on speed
McDonald's delivery drive is part of CEO Steve Easterbrook's' more general efforts to modernize the brand, with initiatives such as adding kiosks to stores and rolling out mobile orderings.
"People are so used to living their lives with one click of a button," Easterbrook told Business Insider on the topic of delivery in April 2017.
By partnering with UberEATS, McDonald's gained access to a sleek, super-modern delivery interface. According to the company, customers tend to spend more and shop at different times such as late at night than when they visit stores.
While originally there was skepticism over if customers would be willing to pay the delivery fee required by UberEATS, McDonald's say that it has been impressed by demand. In a call with investors in January, McDonald's said that delivery was the biggest contributor to comparable sale growth in several major markets in the fourth quarter.

Had that problem start in early 30s.
I am very picky about restaurants.
“I hit 40 and then couldnt eat national fast food without getting sick”
it took us a decade longer to reach that point even though we haven’t eaten fast food for decades. over the last 20 years, commercials, coupons, and nostalgia caused us to try it a again couple of times. One time was Big Macs and one time was Wendy’s bacon cheese burgers. Both times were sickening ... literally. (Even worse was trying some Velveeta we bought at Costco. After one slice we threw the rest away.)
If you are not home at the time of delivery, McDonalds will slide the hamburger under your door.
It doesn’t make me sick, but I know that it is not nutritious. And I am picky about the sources of my food. Where do they get their beef or their chicken? I love salmon, but I will not order it in a restaurant unless I know that it is not farmed.
Oh, don’t be so snooty! McDonald’s has some good items, when they are prepared properly. Their coffee is great. :-)
“Perhaps the answer is a FOOD TRUCK. Cook the food in transit so that it comes of the grill or out of the fryer when you get to the customers front door.”
maybe not a bad idea ... the burger truck could slowly cruise the neighborhoods playing a cutesy, annoying jingle over a loud speaker that penetrates for blocks, with said truck covered with cute cartoonish pictures of burgers, fries, shakes, etc.
Unless McDonalds has figured out how to deliver hot French Fries they are at a disadvantage. Eating a few hot fries as you’re driving away from the drive thru is a big part of the experience.
Taco Bell may have an advantage since people can eat delivered TB with the familiar comforts of sitting on their own toilet at home. Saves on their time AND steps.
We have a locally owned McD’s in the area, they own at least a dozen stores.
They treat their employees like gold, they have great food, and a great reputation in the community.
Their stores are spotless and I cannot give them a higher recommendation in any area.
Taco Bell is going to have a problem keeping those tacos crunchy. As it is, going through drive through, the tacos are soggy before you leave the lot.
Ditto.
Yes, there are very well run franchises but that is NOT the norm. And, the food products they use are so full of preservatives and chemicals and Lord knows what else, it’s simply not safe for me to eat it.
I’d prefer to go to a restaurant that is locally owned using fresh ingredients. Yes, sometimes that means I pay 10-15 for a burger, but so be it..
How bad a shape will this nation be in when people no longer have to even get off the couch to go out and get their fast food?
“Pizza places have been doing it for years so the consumers will not have to be educated. The key is speed. There are few things worse then cold cheeseburgers and fries. If they can not keep the food hot, it will not work.”
I was thinking the same thing. Taco Bell burritos do not travel well. KFC would probably be okay. McDonald’s...yeah, you’d need to get there pretty quick.
I'll see your Jabba the Hutt and raise you one Pizza the Hutt ...
You win! You win!
I am old enough to remember a time businesses did just that.
Bakery trunks with breads, cakes, pies and donuts would have a route. You could wave them down to get what you wanted.
Milk delivery - Milk and other dairy products delivered to your door.
There were even miniature “amusement parks” on wheels that would stop in a neighborhood and even Movies.
Of course back then gas was 20 cents a gallon, but still, people made a living this way.
I am sure other will remember what it was like up to the 1960s
But you can still get a burger.
