A California lawmaker has introduced a new bill that would make it illegal to distribute single-use straws to consumers at restaurants unless specifically requested.
Ian Calderon, the Democratic majority leader in California’s lower house, brought forth Assembly Bill 1884, citing environmental protection as a reason to discourage the use of “single use straws,” typically distributed with soft drinks, smoothies, and coffee, which are then disposed of after being used.
“We need to create awareness around the issue of one-time use plastic straws and its detrimental effects on our landfills, waterways, and oceans,” Calderon stated in a media release.
“AB 1884 is not a ban on plastic straws,” he added. “It is a small step towards curbing our reliance on these convenience products, which will hopefully contribute to a change in consumer attitudes and usage.”

For the basis of discussion, the fine here suggested is $1,000.
What’ll happen to waiters....is that the fear of the thousand-dollar fine will be such, that they all refuse to handle the straws, and you the customer will have to get up and walk up to the bar to get a straw, or you will end up carrying straws on your person.
Someone should start a listing of the 10,000 reasons why you need to leave California for 49 other possible states.
I’m waiting for them to mandate, under penalty of the law, penile pedometers, so they can regulate the amount of sex each one of us is allowed to have! Of course, Illegal Mexicans will get an “extra allowance” because they are “disadvantaged.”

So, if we venture into a California restaurant and the hapless wait staff hands us unsolicited straws we are to call 9-1-1? Wow, I wonder how they respond? SWAT team, guns drawn?

And the rationality is, it’s not the waiter that will be fined but the business owner. And it’s ok if the homeless litter because they have civil rights and even though they have money they can’t afford a fine for littering which is somehow racist but a business owner will pay the fine because he will want to stay in business.
This is just another creative, pot-induced idea to finance benefits, housing, medical and education to keep illegals and ner-do wells voting democrat and living higher on the hog than the average working family of citizens.

For dropping a “penny” straw on the table you get fined or jailed? Only in Kalifornica, the land of nuts, fruits and flakes. I wonder what they will come up with next.
What does it actually cost to create such an “important” bill, get it on the agenda, discuss/debate its worth and then vote yea or nay on it’s acceptance? Seems a lot of wasted time and the peoples money just to make a point. I’d suggest they have a lot more important things to address such a illegals running amuck.
I love California. It makes me feel less bad about living in New York :-)
On a serious note, this would be brought to the courts and should be shot down as cruel and unusual punishment. Because it would be.
