The head of Scotland Yard has thrown her weight behind the idea that knife crime should be treated as a public health crisis rather than purely a crime.
Speaking to the London assembly, Cressida Dick argued that persistent levels of knife-related violence required a preventative program to help reduce the number of deaths and injuries from attacks.
Dicks comments will be seen as a significant show of support from the UKs most senior police officer for knife crime to be viewed through the public health lens.
Responding to a question on whether the Met was engaged in discussions about knife crime and public health, Dick said she was aware that most of those involved or prosecuted for knife crime had a troubled upbringing.
She said: We are all committed to the notion that prevention is better than enforcement, which is, after all, the public health approach.
[The majority of such offenders] are people who have suffered some kind of adverse experience of a significant sort when they are young and/or have limited or problematic family lives and parenting, all things that can lead to other negative outcomes and not just being subject to, or causing, serious violence to somebody.
Her comments came only days before three fatal attacks on New Years Eve and a fourth on New Years Day, killings that pushed the total number of fatal stabbings last year in London to 80.
Sarah Jones, Labour MP for Croydon Central, and chair of the all-party parliamentary group on knife crime, said: Any person of influence who suggests we start taking that approach is very welcome.

This is satire right?
“Also, things that are blunt are banned, and things that are heavy are banned, and things that are blunt AND heavy are RIGHT OUT AS WELL!!!”
Also, things that aren’t blunt are banned, and things that are not heavy are banned, and things that are not blunt AND not heavy are RIGHT OUT AS WELL!!!
You figure it out.
Londoners are just going to have to get used to stabbings as part of their way of life.
pretty much
What’s next a Cane crime pokicy oraa Brella Bang?
So knives are now a public health crisis? Really?
This crap passes as leadership?

Clearly they need to ban knives. Public menace and all. They will just have to gnaw their lamb chops.
I think my state (Maryland) takes the cake for incomprehensible knife laws.
For instance, one cannot carry an automatic knife with “intent to harm others”
How do you prove intent before the fact?
You can spend a lot on a knife - it is easy to get into the $500 - $1500 range. For very good, solid feel and operation at a far more reasonable price look into Kershaw or Columbia River Knife & Tool (CRKT).
“Here’s a novel idea...”
As if TPTB want to curb crime.
Its an insane society that believes if we ban all guns and knives that criminals will peacefully walk among us.
Knife control law.
Knives must not be sharp.
Because knives must not be sharp, it is forbidden to serve meat that requires a sharp knive.
Knives must be made of environmentally sustainable material and be recyclable.
No environmentally acceptable material exists. Therefore knives shall not be made (legally).
Knife buyback policy. The price of a knife in a buyback shall be determined by how much others are scared by its looks. A child’s drawing of a knife with jagged edges shall draw a higher buy back price than are real knife shaped like a cycle. As we all know, a cycle, along with a hammer, are symbols of a caring government.
This is the logical result of liberals blaming collective influence or biological disorders for crime.
If it is only because you’re ignorant, stupid or crazy, the solutions are “education” or medical.
It is due to their wish and mistaken belief that everything can be solved by just talking and loving on people, though a few pills might help, sometimes.
How do you prove the knife has any intent at all? ;-P
“Per Wiki - her romance is Helen.”
So Cressida plays the one with the Dick?
A buy-back of knives may help.
Can ya still buy ammonia for yer squirtgun?
