Former Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson reacted angrily to President Trump's apparent abandonment of a campaign pledge to leave pot policy to the states, saying he hopes the pivot ends Trump's shot at re-election.

Johnson, who served two terms as a Republican governor of New Mexico, said the Trump administration is "grossly underestimating the anger this will create."

"I hope it dooms his re-election. Trump promised to leave marijuana to the states," Johnson told the Washington Examiner.

This conservative medical marijuana patient thinks pro-nanny staters aren’t very conservative at all.

That brings us closer to hitting the reset button and returning full, legitimate authority back to the states. Until that time, Federal law criminalizes it.

They spent the last year telling us that Trump has no control of the DOJ and now he’s doomed, doomed!

My thought is the ones who voted him into office don’t rely on pot to manage their lives... This guy has had too much of it, I think..

There are limits that apply even to libertarians.

News to me. Limits violate their theology, "unless it hurts someone else."

Libertarians basically defer to no higher transcendent standard.

Medical Marijuana may have its benefits.

But the biggest bennie of it is how otherwise healthy dopers and stoners glom on to it as their raison d’etre.

I chose the Constitution (and rule of law) over cherry-picked “liberty”.

“But the biggest bennie of it is how otherwise healthy dopers and stoners glom on to it as their raison d’etre.”

After working professionally with numerous cannabis users over the last 25 years or so I have yet to see a single instance of this.

Overstated, but yes, a lot of Republican voters don’t see the societal gains from criminalizing this vice.

I think Johnson is wrong.

As much as a natural Conservatism like that of Barry Goldwater opposed the scorched-earth criminalizing of marijuana in every sense, and has opposed the criminal-society that has proceeded from the war on drugs - much like prohibition created, I don’t think MOST people, or majorities anywhere, are personally that interested in marijuana themselves, sufficient for making it an issue anyone is going to win or lose greatly on.

“I chose the Constitution (and rule of law) over cherry-picked “liberty”.”

Same here. It’s interesting that Congress realized many decades ago it needed to amend the Constitution to prohibit the alcohol. All according to the Constitution.

Ever wonder why Congress hasn’t done the same with regards to cannabis?
