FBI director, Justice Department deputy huddle with Paul Ryan amid contempt of Congress threat
Washington Examiner ^ | Jan 3, 2018, 5:27 PM | Susan Ferrechio

The FBI director Christopher Wray and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein met with House Speaker Paul Ryan late Wednesday afternoon, the same day lawmakers were demanding that they turn over documents to the House Intelligence panel about the Trump-Russia collusion probe.

A Ryan spokeswoman declined to discuss the purpose for the meeting other than that it came at the request of Wray and Rosenstein.

The meeting comes as the House Intelligence Committee weighs possible contempt of Congress charges against the two officials. Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., has accused the men of withholding information about the handling of the Trump-Russia collusion probe. The panel gave the two a Jan. 3 deadline to comply with their request for additional documents.

Nunes has accused the FBI and Department of Justice of a “months-long pattern … of stonewalling and obstructing this committee's oversight work.”

Those accusations boiled over last month after stories were leaked to the New York Times and Washington Post saying that FBI agent Peter Strzok, a key investigator in the Trump-Russian probe, was removed from the Russia probe after exchanging text messages critical of Trump to another FBI agent he was involved with romantically. Republicans had been seeking information about why he was removed but were never told anything by FBI or Justice Department directly.

Nunes had also been seeking information about the FBI and Justice Department's use of the Steele dossier, which contains damning but unverified information about President Trump.

I truly hope Congress moves to hold them in contempt. What’s their excuse—Mueller probe? They can’t be allowed to hide behind it. Friken give Nunes what he wants or resign. Or get held in contempt, which will absolutely lead to their firing. And rightly so. Enough!!!

And while we’rs on it, let’s see the FISC warrant application in its entirety! Declassify and release! Let the chips fall where they may.

This is a stinking pile of bull$hit.

The FBI director Christopher Wray and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein met with House Speaker Paul Ryan late Wednesday afternoon,

Wray, Rosenstein and Ryan? With these kinds of meetings, the swamp isn't going to be drained.

And where's Sessions.

FBI & DOJ making some demands of their own, I’ll wager — telling Ryan to get Nunes under control.

It probably is their excuse and you're right that it doesn't hold water. Essentially they would be saying "we cannot comply with your investigation of us because we're currently investigating ourselves and cannot comment on an ongoing investigation." Which is to say, they are lawless. Just declare themselves out of bounds for any congressional oversight whenever they want to with that line of thinking.

“FBI & DOJ making some demands of their own, I’ll wager — telling Ryan to get Nunes under control.”

Yes, that is what I think this meeting was about.

I am not sure who is the actual bad guy is here. Sundance over at CTH speculates that they are stalling so that democrats on the committees don't get information to leak back to the people being investigated.

Whatever the reason, sooner or later somebody has to put their cards on the table.

Not sure that Ryan deserves bashing on this issue, at least until we know what was discussed today. Back in October, Ryan came out and accused the FBI and DOJ of “stonewalling” congress on the dossier issue:

?House Speaker Paul Ryan on Wednesday [10/25/2017] accused The Trump administration’s Justice Department of “stonewalling“ lawmakers’ requests for documents that spell out who paid for a dossier on Donald Trump.

“We’ve had these document requests with the administration, with the FBI in particular, for a long time and they’ve been stonewalling,” Ryan told Reuters, adding that the department and the FBI need to comply with the requests “and they need to do it immediately.”

Ryan was responding to a question about a Washington Post report on Tuesday that said the campaign of Trump’s Democratic rival for the White House, Hillary Clinton, and the Democratic National Committee had helped fund research that became a dossier of allegations about Trump’s connections to Russia.”

It could very well be that this meeting is about handing the requested information over.
