In a key episode, Churchill went to the larger Cabinet and won overwhelming approval for his stalwartness. Here, he made his famous statement, We shall go and we shall fight it out, here or elsewhere, and if at last the long story is to end, it were better it should end, not through surrender, but only when we are rolling senseless on the ground.
After the war, Churchill wrote of the reaction of his colleagues: Quite a number seemed to jump up from the table and came running to my chair, shouting and patting me on the back. There is no doubt had I at this juncture faltered at all in leading the nation, I should have been hurled out of office.
He didnt falter. Churchill tapped into and built up the resolve of the British people. There was a white glow, he wrote later, overpowering, sublime, which ran through our island from end to end. Hitler wouldnt neutralize the British, who escaped Dunkirk and kept up the fight.
The so-called Great Man theory of history might be overly simplistic, but history indisputably has its great men. Darkest Hour does justice to one of them.

The Nazis had a pretty good relationship with Muslims. Not surprising given both sides views on Jews.
His phrasing is sublimely eloquent.
But his vision is most astounding.
An interesting website is Chartwell books in NYC for all things Churchill.
Beat me to it.
Winston Churchill was indeed the savior of civilization, after the utter failure of BPM, Neville Chamberlain “Peace-in-our-time” deal with Adolf Hitler.
Our POTUS, Donald J. Trump was, and, is, the true savior of the American Republic, after the worst POTUS in American history, traitor, turncoat, Barack Hussein Obama and Democrat low life, Hillary Clinton worked so hard to destroy the American Republic.
I pray your prediction comes true.
Exactly. So sad, and the UK is even worse than the USA.
If the leaders of a fee Europe in the 1930s had confronted the little dictators, then Churchill would likely have been a little known figure. America saved Europe and Asia in this mess.
reminds me that “ when good men do nothing, evil flourishes”
Huh? That Russkie peasant with a sub gun turned the eastern European/Asian world into a morass for 60 years ( via his fearless leader’s). What are you thinking?
I saw the movie this last week and he deserves a crack at the Best Actor award.
I could not for the life of me see Gary Oldman in this character. His portrayal for Winston Churchill is so good, you think you were seeing the real man brought back alive. Very believable.
Magnificent performance.
I highly recommend it to the FR crowd.
He was an amazing man, and one of my personal heroes. And his momma was American!!!

For England, he was the right man at the right time for the job.
My all time favorite pic is Churchill posing with the Thompson SMG in his pin-stripe suit, bowler, and the cigar. It’s just SUCH an “In-Your-Face” pic...
Bingo! Churchill stood alone against the threat, but the US saved civilization.

9 out of 10 Germans killed during the WWII died at the hands of a Russian peasant with a PPSH. If all of those krauts were in France in 1944 instead of Russia, Ike, Omar and Monty would have never gotten ashore at Normandy.
I agree. Steven Dillane was great as Lord Halifax.

Publicly stating Churchill’s quotes can get you jail time in England now.
England had its chance with Enoch Powell in the late 60s....they threw it away.
after the utter failure of BPM, Neville Chamberlain Peace-in-our-time deal with Adolf Hitler.
Churchill and Chamberlain became fast friends during the War and wept openly at his funeral.

After the debacle at Gallipoli and then his plan to attack the Axis at their “soft underbelly” in Italy, Churchill always did the right thing—after exhausting all the alternatives.
