Tens of thousands of veterans have expressed interest in obtaining a new national Veterans Identification Card, intended as convenient proof of their service when they seek military discounts offered by retail and restaurant chains.
The high level of interest apparently was too much for the online application site operated by the Department of Veterans Affairs at vets.gov and temporarily knocked it offline not long after it was rolled out at the end of November.
Veterans Affairs has made improvements and is monitoring the system regularly to ensure all veterans can access the application, press secretary Curt Cashour said. The department was processing more than 5,500 completed applications and planned to release a digital version of the free ID card and an app for applying for the card on mobile devices, he said.

I need one or those!
My FL do has a “V” on it.
Me too.
Good move, I got my VA medical ID card in 2014 when I first applied for healthcare.
Is this actually a ‘new’ Veterans ID? I’ve had a Veterans picture ID for several years now.
My military family says you don’t need one if you have a veterans hospital ID or retired military ID card. It’s for those that don’t have any VA ID card of any type. Lot’s of state DL’s have “Veteran” somewhere on it.
Unnecessary. We are not that wonderful. In my case I served and got out. Got what was offered and expected. No need to glorify us.
What about Veterans who have never been in Idaho?
My card has an expiration date. Soylent Green time ?
I don’t see where it states one way or the other that this ID is good for airline travel.
My state is not in TSA compliance in its drivers license as valid ID for travel, and is on, I think, it’s last extension.
Maybe Pres. Trump can get this mandate adiosed or do we want it in place ?
I recently applied for a concealed carry permit, which allowed veterans a discount. But no one told me I needed my DD 214. I am told with my DD 214 I can get veteran noted on my driver license.
See if they come with a MAGA logo...
I’ll have to dig mine out out a box upstairs and go to the DMV.
My DL still has my old address on it. I filed a change of address with SCDMV and got a letter saying as much.
After that, nothing. No sticker or updated license.
Doesn’t Lowe’s give a 10% discount with proof of veteran status?
Thanks for the link.
A VFW card works pretty well, too.
I think I read that in the story.
Thank you
I filled in the email address field and got a graphic saying instructions will be forthcoming.
Someday I guess.......
