A complete power outage at the nations busiest airport, the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, grounded flights Sunday afternoon, threatening to cause a holiday travel nightmare for fliers across the country just over a week before Christmas.
Airport officials said in a news release the power outage has forced the Federal Aviation Administration to suspend outgoing flights and implement a "ground stop" for incoming flights, which "means that flights headed to Atlanta are held on the ground at their departure airport."
International flights will be diverted to land at other airports, U.S. Customs and Border Protection tweeted.
Atlanta Airport tweeted that reports the outage was caused by a construction crew which cut a power line was "NOT confirmed," and added: "We are working with @GeorgiaPower to identify and fix ASAP." The outage happened just after 1 p.m. on Sunday, according to airport officials.

Agree. I have been through enough power outages to know how quickly they can determine where a problem is. Especially in their updated “smart” grids.
Any updates? Been checking and am seeing basically nothing.
“Flight Aware” will show an occasional arrival and departure,
but they all seem to be either freight or private jets.

Thank you for your input. That is very helpful. You have to admit though, the timing is suspicious.
Any info on
Is this limit to the Airport facility or is the outage out
into the Atlanta area?
Its a heck of a lot better than JFK...
HAHAHA....no kidding! I ended up having to drive home from up north the day of the Eclipse. Oy!
Youre good.

Had the unfortunate experience of climbing one of the escalators when it stopped shortly after getting onto it. Lugging 40lbs of luggage too. Miserable.
I’m in NE Atlanta, inside the perimeter - no issues here.
Yes, still going to be interesting trying to get her luggage back, and I think her car might be at the BHM airport. Will have to ask.
Just now heard about a fire underground......is the reason
John McClane: “Holly! Here’s your f____g landing light.!”
Good. Stuff can be replaced.
And I don’t know about her, but I rarely take stuff that’s really important to me in my luggage.
I’m presuming anything of value in anyway, she had on her carry on.
Let us know when she gets out safely.
I’m sure the electric company knows the “root cause” of the outage already but they’re being careful about what they say publicly right now. It sounds like a third party contractor dug up major feeders into the airport.
There is probably a lot of finger-pointing going on right now: by the utility, the contractor, whoever did the blue staking, etc. I’m sure the utility’s Risk Management (claims) representatives and attorneys are already involved.
Oh man, what a chore.
Hang in there:)
What is suspicious about the timing?
Mr. mm and I went to FL recently for a vacation and we drove.
With what we’ve been hearing about the TSA and airports, we didn’t want to be at their mercy, and then have to rent a car on top of it.
It was a somewhat grueling drive down to SC where my sister lives but we survived it.
On the way back, we stopped at Luray and made a three day trip out of it.
It was far cheaper too, and we could take stuff that we couldn’t take on a flight but would have to waste money buying and leaving when we were there.
Hey, me too! I actually was in Nashville to see it. It took me about 4 hours from East of Montgomery to Nashville up I-65, but then 12 hours to get back home via the same route.
We might have been stuck in traffic together! Especially that part between Hartselle and Cullman where ALDOT decided to cut I-65 to ONE LANE!!!
