.....The struggling sandwich chain has seen customer traffic plummet a whopping 25 percent over the past five years....
In a Nov. 30 memo to franchisees that revealed the stomach-churning drop, Subways owners promised $25 million to boost marketing this spring for the companys 44,000 locations and to bring back a limited-time, $4.99 footlong sandwich promotion.....
....the crucial footlong deal aimed squarely at the McDonalds dollar menu is in danger because of a revolt by franchise owners, who fret that doubling down on discounts will further shave their already thin profits.
More than 400 of them have signed a petition protesting the two-month footlong deal thats slated to begin in January....

Firehouse is the fo shizzle around these parts. Them an Larrys giant subs.
Part of this may also be a growing wariness of eating food doled out by low wage kids from air exposed containers caused by Chipotle’s recent exposure as e-coli city. Thanks for the tip about their politics, though. They’re off my options list altogether now.
Will second Firehouse.

Never, ever liked Subway - it was the last place in the local food court I’d visit - mother loved it, though b/c they had a punch card at the time and the 10th sandwich was free.
Place always smelled funny.
That Subway was always busy, opened at 7 AM and was right next to an extremely busy Starbucks, one of the busiest in the state the manager told me b/c it’s the closest one to the airport.
Subway went out of business about a month ago - we were really shocked.
I’d say California’s high minimum wage law is hurting their bottom line as well.
They got stingy with the meats which were reduced in quality and began using bread with an unpleasant bitter aftertaste, preservatives I’d guess. That’s why they’re going down, I’ll spend several dollars more at Jimmy John’s for good meat and plenty of it on good bread if I feel like a sub sandwich anymore.
Jimmy John’s is a bit more expensive but better quality and more ingredients.
While driving through Arkansas on the way to Houston a few years ago, Mrs. henkster & I stopped for lunch at a Subway just over the river from Memphis. I ordered a meatball marinara sandwich, and discovered the marinara sauce was ketchup based. Ugh...left a very bad taste in my mouth.
Left with very low opinion of Subway. And Arkansas...until we had a nice dinner at Chick-Fil-A in Texarkana.
My wife loves subway....I don’t get it. I swung in there the other day and picked he up a sandwich. The bins the meat and fixings were in was gross.
Wawa kicks the stuffing out of Subway. No contest. Great food, good prices, smooth ordering process. I went into Subway the first time expecting a Wawa experience and was hugely disappointed with their miserable sandwiches.
New Yorkers will generally never admit there’s anything better about Philly, but when you ask my NY wife, she’ll say Wawa.
And now I showed her this and we’re both hungry LOL
Fred DeLuca was an inspiration for me (in business.) His book, “Start Small, Finish Big” taught me some profitable lessons.
I have not eaten at Subway since well before Jared was outed as a pervert.
Every Subway franchise near me is owned by Arabs (I think they are “Palestinians”). The staff is without exception quite morose, and they act as if they are doing you a favor to give you more than one napkin per sandwich.
Give me Firehouse Subs any day!
Discounts are the heroin of value propositions.
The last time I went to Subway, nobody working there “Habla’d Ingles.”
Jimmy Johns is good also. They also use real meat, and dont try to cover it up with lots of vegetables. I would think Subway is best for the vegetarian sandwich, but for all else their meat is questionable.
Sequestered and on the receiving end of more than a few foot-longs.
Between the not soft bread, skimpy meat, flies on the toppings, Jarred and Moochie, well...
