Legislation making it a crime for a doctor to perform an abortion if the fetus might have Down syndrome has cleared its final legislative hurdle in Ohio and is headed to the governor.
Several other states have considered similar measures, triggering emotional debate over women's rights, parental love and the trust between doctor and patient.
The bill cleared the Senate in a 20-12 vote Wednesday. It was a priority for the state's largest anti-abortion group, Ohio Right to Life.

Isn’t this more Government Creep into the private decisions of a family? No matter how compassionate and loving we think ourselves to be, we online posters here are not going to be there to take in each and every child with this disability.
I say we leave it up to the parents and their doctor instead of the Government. I have to politely agree to disagree with many others here.
Would you say that about a born child with a disability or only the unborn?
India has tried (unsuccessfully) to legislate a halt to aborting of female babies. Doctors just “unofficially” give the heads-up to the parents so the murders may proceed uninterrupted...
Most conspiracies to commit murder are conducted in private, and let's be honest, a, "family decision," to abort a child is just that.
If you do a DNA check, and find XXY genes, you have found a Downs child.
