Cooking fire at a homeless encampment sparked Bel-Air blaze that destroyed homes, officials say

The fire that destroyed six homes and damaged a dozen others in Bel-Air last week was caused by a cooking fire at a nearby homeless encampment, Los Angeles fire officials said Tuesday.

For a “number of years,” homeless people had been living in a camp along Sepulveda Boulevard where it passes under the 405 Freeway, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Peter Sanders said.

Investigators who inspected the encampment found evidence that people had been cooking and sleeping in the area but did not find anyone there, Sanders said. The department has no suspects, he said.

Los Angeles has been struggling in recent years with a major uptick in the homeless population, with encampments spreading out from downtown L.A. into neighborhoods across the city. A report in May put the homeless population in Los Angeles County at 58,000, a 23% increase over the last year.

The count found that the homeless population in the West L.A. service area — which included the Bel-Air and Brentwood neighborhoods — increased from 4,659 to 5,511 in that period.

"Notice that homeless stories are “back in style “ now that Trump recovery is accelerating?"

As far back as the early 80s, some conservative with time on his hands went back thru network news archives and counted 'em all up, and found that the number of feature stories of "the homeless problem in America" when a Republican was in the White House were many, many times more than when a Dem was in charge.

My family used to live on the other side (East Gate). I don’t recall ever seeing homeless people around there 30 years ago. I left L.A. in 1985 — sad to see such a decline.

"... Atlanta last year burned out the bride ..."

Now that surprises me. I can understand an increase in the practice of Suttee in areas with large Hindu populations, but I didn't think Atlanta was one of those places.

Homelessness caused by global warming.
So still Trump and global warming to blame.

Hardly a day goes by that the Media cannot find some homeless to report on.

Must be a Republican administration in the White House. Homelessness seems to disappear whenever a Democrat administration is in power.

Wasn’t the Napa Valley fire started by an illegal vagrant?

Haven for the homeless. No surprise if there were a few sanctuary-protected illegals too.

Wait, wait, wait. Didn't moonbeam say "climate change" caused the fires?

They’d have burned down the barracks within the first month, if not sooner.

Almost all the people I know in Bel Air are Conservative Republicans.

Rent control causes the phenomenon of "homeless" populations, as Willam Tucker proved a long time ago.

So you could say rent control has led, not only to the destruction of the incentive to build and market new housing, but to a holocaust offering of the existing, very expensive houses being occupied by hard-working people who have struggled to pay for them.

This sacrifice to the pinko god of the Progressives is being offered mostly by people who live far away from the either the fire or the hobos who touched it off.

Illegal aliens have very often been involved in setting fires, much of it covered up.

Same thing happened to my town. 3 times last year. Destroyed 2 buildings that were over 100 years old.

Told my wife at that time, I don't think we can afford the homeless in this town. They are destroying historic landmarks.

The Sonoma/Napa fires also happened under high wind conditions and were caused by PG&E not maintaining trees near power lines. I saw an article (just once before it was disappeared) saying that PG&E had diverted funds slated for tree maintenance over to the profit column. There was a report of an illegal starting a fire, however I believe it was a deflection.
