Trump, Mattis Turn Military Loose On ISIS, Leaving Terror Caliphate In Tatters

BAGHDAD – Hundreds of ISIS fighters had just been chased out of a northern Syrian city and were fleeing through the desert in long convoys, presenting an easy target to U.S. A-10 "warthogs."

But the orders to bomb the black-clad jihadists never came, and the terrorists melted into their caliphate -- living to fight another day. The events came in August 2016, even as then-Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump was vowing on the campaign trail to let generals in his administration crush the organization that, under President Obama, had grown from the “jayvee team” to the world’s most feared terrorist organization.

“I will…quickly and decisively bomb the hell out of ISIS,” Trump, who would name legendary Marine Corps Gen. James Mattis as secretary of defense, promised. “We will not have to listen to the politicians who are losing the war on terrorism."

Just over a year later, ISIS has been routed from Iraq and Syria with an ease and speed that's surprised even the men and women who carried out the mission. Experts say it's a prime example of a campaign promise kept. President Trump scrapped his predecessor’s rules of engagement, which critics say hamstrung the military, and let battlefield decisions be made by the generals in the theater, and not bureaucrats in Washington.

Interesting sequence. First, for eight years have a pussy in charge, throwing changeups and intentionally walking hitters. Then a new POTUS arrives and lets the military throw fastballs. Worked better than many thought possible.

Yes indeed, things would be different today. The region may not have little Kim there if we hadn’t had such weak leaders.

Shame they didn’t go after the convoys. Perfect circumstances - no civilian casualties.

Mattis must not have quite had things together by then. Obama left the military in “Tatters” after all.

Bottom line is this admin has done more in less than a year than previous admins did in 4 years.

I don’t understand why people are surprised...4,200 rounds/minute of 30mm depleted uranium shells is pretty damned fast in my book. :>)

The answer to our ISIS problem has ALWAYS been fairly simple: Destroy them where you find them.
Unfortunately, our last President had more in common with them than he did with us, so we had to fight a pretend war.

we would not have had LBJ running the Vietnam war out of his jeep in Texas.

When I was in Nam under LBJ in 66-67 I was under the clear impression it was McNamara, Cliford, etal calling from Ivy League Campuses in the NE just after lunch with Henry.

I never heard that it was LBJ in TX.

"When I was in Nam under LBJ in 66-67"

I was at Cam Rahn Bay when LBJ came in 1966. (I was a civilian then)

Yes, it’s about time somebody noticed that our new CIC has been orchestrating the destruction of ISIS. Along with his commanders and our magnificent troops.

I’m assuming he fixed the ROEs so our soldiers no longer need to consult with an attorney in DC before pulling the trigger when facing an enemy combatant.

"Too bad we didn’t have someone like Trump during Vietnam."

Yep! There could be close to 50,000 heroes alive today instead of having been wasted by bureaucratic government fiat. Maybe the whole thing could have been over in 6-months.

“Yes, the A-10 Warthog is an old platform, but still a GREAT one. I feel it is still a vital part of our ground-attack air capability!”

That’s a fact!
