The owner of the Golden Krust restaurant chain who committed suicide inside his Bronx factory was being sued by a former staffer for thousands in lost wages, court records show.

Robert Wray, a former maintenance staffer, sued Lowell Hawthorne in Manhattan federal court, saying he was never paid for the overtime he worked during his 11-year tenure.

Wray’s lawsuit contends more than 100 other Gold Krust staffers were similarly stiffed for overtime they worked, the 15-page complaint filed on March 8 says.

The case —which seeks class action status — is pending.

Interesting, I was wondering if it was a financial squeeze of some sort. Sad all around.

Well, killing yourself seems to be an extreme way to avoid going to court, but it works......

There’s always 2 sides to every story.

Maybe they had it coming so he stiffed them.

After the first ten years you might get a clue.

I had never heard of it not being in that area, but it was an interesting success story, til it wasn’t.

Probably his adult children will run it, even more than they already have been doing. If they don’t quickly find a way to compensate for those unpaid back wages, the debtors might (via representation) seize full control of the estate. I believe that is the basic policy.

This is what happened but on a much grander scale, when Michael Jackson died. His family kept bickering and trying to harvest for themselves, when the music producers took control of all those millions of assets. Prince also may be worked out this way, since he did not leave a notorized will.

He was paid for the overtime, he just wasn’t paid at time-and-a-half.

>>Maybe they had it coming so he stiffed them.<<

No reason for them to all commit suicide (literal reading of headline).

Insane. He had 200 franchises across America! Biggest West Indian entrepreneurial success story to date. Hard to believe that ONE location’s employees could cause this.

If you’re in big business, you’re going to get sued at some point.

There has to be more to this story than Hawthorne getting despondent over a lawsuit.
