Americans were rightfully outraged when they learned that members of Congress had used taxpayer dollars to pay settlement claims to alleged victims of sexual harassment.
They were even more outraged when they saw the numbers. The secret payouts for harassment claims, of which there have been more than 200, amounted to more than $17 million. There's no telling so far how much of that money went to silence sexual assault accusers.
Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) is seeking to release the names of lawmakers who used this "hush fund." She's a co-sponsor of the Congressional Accountability and Hush Fund Elimination Act, which would require full disclosure of the settlements within 30 days.
Using taxpayer dollars to settle sexual harassment claims against members of Congress is disgusting. We're going to release the names of those who used this hush fund, and these individuals will pay this money back to the American people with interest. https://t.co/Wloe8uw0QT— Marsha Blackburn (@MarshaBlackburn) November 30, 2017
"Like most of my colleagues, I was completely disgusted to find out about this," Blackburn said.
When claims are presented, she explained, the names are anonymous.
"Let's bring the sunshine in," Blackburn offered. "Let's bring some transparency and accountability."
"These have been personal bailouts," she added. "Let's end this."
It's a bipartisan effort, with Rep. Tulsi Gubbard (D-HI) one of the Democrats on board.
“Enough is enough,” Hawaii Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, one of the bill’s sponsors, said. “For far too long sexual predators have roamed freely through the halls of Congress -- the people’s house -- while survivors of sexual harassment and assault have essentially been isolated, bullied and shamed into silence.”
In addition to unmasking the lawmakers who used the hush fund, the bipartisan bill will mandate that taxpayers get their money back - "with interest," says Blackburn.
Lawmakers are introducing other pieces of legislation intended to combat a culture of sexual abuse on Capitol Hill. On Wednesday, Congress passed a bill requiring members to participate in anti-harassment training.
$17 million of our money. Yes, actually, I'd love to see what that money bought and for whom. I'd also love to know if there were any strings attached to the payouts, because this is DC and everything costs something.
Any opposition would be claimed as wanting to protect the victims from becoming known.
Yes she will.
Yes she will.
Just like the priests...
That is what you say and you know doo doo.
I want to know when this fund was started, the names of the pukes who set the slush fund up in the first place, and if it required a vote, I want the names of those who voted for it.
-—Years from now-—
I would think That Marsha might provoke a staffer to leak the info.
A good old fashioned leak might be far more expedient than a formal announcement.
Then release the names of the offenders only along with the amounts paid to “Victim X” and “Victim ABC” etc.
They used my tax dollars to pay for their sins. I want to know who did the spending!
I think that the entertainment business (for which a celeb would work for) are a completely different breed of cat. Just look at Weinstein, Spacey, and all the other Hollywood sleazeballs. It was was just sort of expected behavior in that industry.
I’ve worked for quite a few tech firms large and small the past 20 years and all had mandatory harassment training and zero tolerance. Of course, you could argue that there were quiet, under-the-table payoffs to hush up some complainers and we never heard about that. But all companies have excellent rumor mills and I doubt that happened. The miscreants were quietly disappeared...and THEN the rumor mill really ran wild.

Awan & Paki ISI has had this list of name for.....years.
It is all about money, power and intimidation. This is a Biblical truth that is often ignored or disbelieved. All humans possess a sinful nature. Lay the temptation before them (money and power) and most humans will give in to that sinful impulse and use that money and power to indulge their appetites.
Didn’t think of that.
Pumping more than iron.

Wikileaks
Who can’t believe one of these sleazebags like Rangel, McCain, Scarboro etc. didn’t go to their main squeeze and say “ Hey they have a slush fund for us!! You go tell them I squeezed your boobs, ask for 39,000 bucks and I’ll take you to Aruba for a month! No, they ain’t allowed to tell anybody.”
That will be their cover story.
For me, any opposition is a sign that the Opposer must know that his name is on the list. They're all guilty until they vote to make this public and prove to me that they are not on the list.
