The Boston Globe recent ran an article where it acknowledged the obvious: the long term goal of the gun control movement (recently relabeled as gun safety), is to confiscate a large number of Americans' firearms.
The Globe has almost everything else wrong in its article, but they are honest about the desire for gun confiscation.
In other words, the proposals arent just difficult to enact in the current political climate; their practical effects would also be quite limited. On occasion, though, leading Democrats will make oblique reference to a more sweeping policy change: seizing a huge number of weapons from law-abiding citizens. At a New Hampshire forum in the fall of 2015, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton spoke approvingly of an Australian gun buyback program that collected more than 650,000 weapons a buyback that, she neglected to mention, was compulsory.

The logic of gun control lies, at bottom, in substantially reducing the number of deadly weapons on the street and confiscation is far and away the most effective approach. Is there any conceivable turn of events in our politics that could make confiscation happen? And what would a mass seizure look like?
Then the article goes on to praise the imposition of extreme restrictions on gun ownership in Australia, and to put forward claims that the restrictions worked. Those claims are easily countered. That is not what we are dealing with here.
Ultimately, the Globe admits that massive gun confiscation is not possible, at least now, at least not directly.
Why are so many people on the political left willing to consider confiscating guns, in direct violation of the Constitution, with the obvious high costs, high risks, and low chance of success? Here are some

Boating accidents. Lots and lots of boating accidents.
Boston Globule.
But that’s not the point. The point is that Chucky hasn’t the guts to actually DO what he wants to LEGISLATE.
Yes, that is correct. It is important that he realize that a direct confiscation scheme would put him at risk.
He is not stupid. I believe he knows this already, and it is why it has not happened. I recall some comment that he or another leftist made about .50 BMG caliber rifles ... that they must be out lawed... because they could go right through an armored Limousine.
True....UNTIL the straw hits the camel's back. One of the biggest things keeping confiscation in check is that the pro-confiscation pols don't know which straw will trigger the Second American Revolution.
Kind of like this, I imagine...
I'm your huckleberry.
Looks like you got your wars mixed up.
CW II, and they lose.
Time for me to go out and get that .308 I have been planning to buy. Thanks, Boston Globe, for the reminder of my God given right to self defense.

Wars tend to happen when one side decides the costs of a war are much less than the benefits.
It is important for us to remind Progressives that the cost of infringing on the Second Amendment are much greater than the benefits.
On Confiscation Day most cops will call in sick with the blue flu.
The Globe is absolutely correct.
All we had to do to eliminate the scourge of drug addiction was outlaw and confiscate all drugs.
The same thing will happen if we outlaw guns.
When, oh when, will we learn?
British General Gage confiscated guns in Boston. Tried to seize those outside of town at Concord and Lexington.
Boston still loves gun confiscation.
That’s the whole point of gun confiscation - it does nothing to take guns out of the hands of street criminals but quite a lot to reduce the risk of Romanian Term Limits being applied to politicians who overstep their Constitutionally-limited authority.
” I recall some comment that he or another leftist made about .50 BMG caliber rifles ... that they must be out lawed... because they could go right through an armored Limousine.”
Well, since the pen is Mighter than the sword, let’s start with pens!
The radical left in this country has ALREADY declared civil war.
Their appointees in the Federal Bureaucracies and the Courts are relentlessly undermining a legitimate election whose results they reject. They are nullifying traditional Constitutional powers of a Presidency they reject.
They have organized activist street groups, funded by wealthy elites who share their vision of society.
They have recruited and paid off or blackmailed the forces of opposition.
The ONLY people right now who support a Constitutionalist vision for America with gun rights are Trump and the people who elected him.
At some point these two groups will be reaching for other tools than words, or one group will wind up totally capitulating to the other.
