Rush of pot grows splits rural California before legal sales

The four young men had just started their marijuana harvest in rural Northern California when a dozen sheriff's deputies swooped in with guns drawn, arrested them and spent the day chopping down 150 bushy plants with machetes.

"I could do this every day if I had the personnel," Calaveras County Sheriff Rick DiBasilio said during the operation near the Sierra Nevada foothills town of Copperopolis, about two hours east of San Francisco.

I see no reason why the price should not eventually approach what it would cost for a private party to grow for their own use. The profits from the illegal trade all come from the rarity created by laws against pot.

In fact, what with economies of scale, I'd expect the eventual retail price to be lower than what it would cost for a private party to grow for their own use.

Do cartels use expensive drones for crop-checking that can be chickenhawked by larger drones?

Who knows? Their pre-legalization MO was usually a several-acre grow requiring live-in sentries/tenders.They could be relying on white boys to grow and just using their distribution network to move it, now. In October, Oregon State Police busted a couple of H’Mong from Minnesota that flew to NV, picked up 200 pounds of weed in CA, and were running up I-5 in a 2017 SUV, back to MN. Boys coulda used a trash compacter...bags were like a sofa on the street. Or maybe there’s a good market for fluffy buds in MN. If they’re dropping cash for real estate, drones oughta be a wise investment. Sounds like they’re just farming. Dogs and guns and a little seclusion should do, if you can truck in water.

I'm a Kalifornian like you and I have neighbors who I know consume pot regularly. I hope they are growing their own now and don't have contact with the illegal drug community. They and I will be better off.

Would I prefer that they didn't consume at all? Of course. I don't use drugs, alcohol, or nicotine. I can't even tolerate caffeine any more. The laws we had and those we still have are and would always be ineffective. People make up their own minds about what they should be permitted to do. Government action to prevent them won't work if a significant number are unsupportive.

Never going to stop the users Medical or others, I understand that and that is their business. It is when it encroaches on others rights that it becomes a HUGE problem and unless your personally effected all is good.

Smoking or otherwise ingesting marijuana makes some people more calm, others become paranoid or terrified, and some go totally psychotic. Some never become free of fear and paranoia, or only with great difficulty.

It is not “medicine” nor a panacea.

There are some actually beneficial medicines make from mj, but with the THC intoxicants removed.

Additionally, in my county, and likely the state, every single “medical” marijuana grower grows many more plants than legally allowed to sell on the side.

If someone wants mj to intoxicate themselves, or as “medicine”, they should be allowed one or two plants. That’s it. No government getting involved, that’s my POV. But to grow for selling? No way.

In my county, all of it (see my comment above). Plus there are something like two docs in the state that authorize cards for anyone and everyone who asks.

“Let’s hear it for ‘little reefer madness jeremiah” & his latest prohibitionist diatribe.

This is anecdotal but it happened & if you do your usual thing, it’s no biggie. When my wife & I were at the dispensary last week so I could purchase more medicine, we met a nice couple in their late 60’s. The husband has parkinson’s & could barely get around. He & I went to the area where you actually order & pay for your medicine.

My wife & his wife struck up a conversation about how much cannabis was working for their spouses. The other lady confessed she will never forget how her husband stopped shaking moments after ingesting full-flower extracted cannabis oil for the 1st time.

Add to that the folks I’ve met there who are so happy to be off opioids that made them sick & now use a medicine that gives them the pain relief they crave & I’ve seen more than enough evidence that cannabis is medicine, not discounting my own personal experience in using cannabis medicinally (Wow, what a long windy sentence, right?) that you’re claims have little to no basis in fact.

Take care, little. Hope you & yours had a great Thanksgiving.

I’v been a smoker (tobacco) for over 50 years, in all that time I am the only person I have ever known to grow my own tobacco.
It takes work, knowledge, and time, to grow and process good tobacco.
Most people are to lazy or ignorant to even try.
I brew my own beer with the barley and hops I grow.
I distill my own whiskey out of the corn I grow.
I roll my own smokes out of the tobacco I grow.
All of these things I mention above are not overly technical, nor are they overly difficult.
But they do require a lot of what most folks would call hard work and attention to detail.
If pot were made completely legal today it would be my guess that less than 1% of the users would bother to grow their own.

Anecdotal? My a** and you know it.

Dopers absolutely refuse to see one negative thing about mj use or growing ops.

I don’t give a crap if someone grows a couple of plants for their own use as long as gov isn’t paying for it and they aren’t being supported by the gov. Get stupid, loaded, “medicated” or whatever suits your fancy.

But pretending or lying to yourselves that there is no downside whatsoever to mj use or legalized growing, is now getting totally transparent.

Stone on, stoners!

Dopers have a utopian mindset due to brain malfunction. And of course growers who grow to sell refuse to ever see any downside - they are real greenies all right - folding green, that is.
