Rush of pot grows splits rural California before legal sales

The four young men had just started their marijuana harvest in rural Northern California when a dozen sheriff's deputies swooped in with guns drawn, arrested them and spent the day chopping down 150 bushy plants with machetes.

"I could do this every day if I had the personnel," Calaveras County Sheriff Rick DiBasilio said during the operation near the Sierra Nevada foothills town of Copperopolis, about two hours east of San Francisco.

You obviously do not live in my county - rural SW OR. Our valley and the whole county is getting trashed. There are 120 legal grow ops in my county - and AT 1000 or more illegal ones.

I’ve explained in detail the situation here many times. I don’t know how it is in adjoining counties.

I don’t know how you dealt with legal grows for 2 years - was it even legal 2 years ago? I don’t think so, other then so-called “medical” mj which has been legal for almost 20 years, and is so misused it’s a total farce. Every single medical mj grower grows way more than authorized and sells it, which is illegal.

Thanks.

The county asked voters last May if we wanted to ban dope growing on RR 5 zoned land (rural residential). The vote was over 60% to ban it, it was an advisory vote. Now they are figuring out the details and the dope growers are rabidly furious and freaking out so badly I would not be surprised if there is violence. I mean “even more” violence.

We have dealt with legal pot grows for a couple of years now, and the bottom line is: “no big deal”. And the local economy has perked up substantially. Now I expect that to subside in a little while when the price comes down to earth, but it is not the disaster people make it out to be.

Spoilsport. :-p

Also in SW Oregon, Josephine county. Every where you look you see six foot high cedar fences mandated by county rules, neighbors pissed that yard lights are on 24 hours a day. Water tankers chewing up the road. A stinking mess.

Just freepmailed you.

It’s insane. They’re stealing from every creek and river branch, draining the acquifer if they have wells, poisoning waterways and surrounding areas with profligate overuse of who knows what chemicals, using all manner of solvents and other strange stuff to make dabs, attracting “trimmigants” who shoplift, crap everywhere and commit other petty crimes, and on and on and on. Car theft and car crashes, assault, murder, break ins, and heroin and meth us all way, way up. I’d say in my valley there are 1000 grows, I wonder how many in the whole county.

We sold our ranch 10 years ago and moved into town, now we live on the river!! The new owner just sold the ranch to a grower for 1.3 mil, just for the 1858 water rights

With CA legalizing pot next year, the immense profits will be greatly diminished forcing growers into larger operations. Mom and Pop’s will be forced out or into a niche market.

We miss watching all the Beamers and Mercs going past our place in the fall!! NOT!!

Earlier this year I had business to do in California, in the Santa Barbara area. I brought my 17 year old son and his Xbox One with me—he chilled in the hotel while I was at the business working.

Anyway, a friend of mine from Chicago was also there doing business, who had done so multiple times. So he took us on a drive up to the El Camino Ceilo in the mountains. We got out and walked up to La Cumbre peak.

So, long story short, I smelled a horrible skunk! Really smelly and odoriferous. I said so. My friend said, “Ain’t skunk, that’s pot!” Turned the corner of the trail, and there were two young women passing a blunt.

I’m a baby boomer, so I know what pot smells like. Whatever those two were smoking, it was skunk flavored, and almost made me retch! (I know skunk as I was sprayed directly when my stupid dog attacked one at my feet in an overgrown meadow.)

Maybe the legit growers should be as upset as the nongrowers. Policing their own ranks , even. But if it’s cartels, nobody wants to poke the tiger.

I’ve wondered about commando attacks on pumps. Between dogs and guns, a spraying operation would get real ugly. Interruptions in light can mess up the flowering of weed. I suppose they have back-up generators. Maybe snipe their lightbulbs.

There’s a stretch of highway nearby that gets quite a few skunk road kills. My first though when I smelled them used to be “skunk.” Now it’s weed, until I study it a bit. Only really smells at harvest time.

The ONLY good thing that might come from legalized pot (and I live in USSR-WAState) is that it will probably be mostly Democrats / liberals who smoke the stuff. They might be stoned on election day so will probably just lay on the couch eating Doritos.

"...when the price comes down to earth, ..."

I see no reason why the price should not eventually approach what it would cost for a private party to grow for their own use. The profits from the illegal trade all come from the rarity created by laws against pot. It's just a weed.

Who knows who is legal and who is not? I looked at the county by county list of licensed growers, my county has 120 legal grows. There have got to be 1000 just in my valley which is just part of the county. No addresses or locations are given for the legal ops, and the names mean nothing to anyone except the licensees.

I can only assume that way over 95% of the growers in my valley are illegal. Locals, those who just moved here and bought property with huge wads of cash, and then the cartels - MX, Romanians, Russians, Bulgarians.

While I agree that there are legitimate medical uses for Marijuana (unlike totally useless prescription drugs) much of “medical Marijuana” truly is a scam
