KIM JONG UN MAY HAVE CAUSED A PARASITIC WORM EPIDEMIC IN NORTH KOREA BY MAKING FARMERS SPREAD HUMAN FAECES ON THEIR CROPS

The prevalence of parasitic worms causing health problems in North Korea may be the result of a personal intervention by Kim Jong Un, who urged farmers to spread human excrement on their fields to fertilize crops.

The hermit nation’s leader issued an instruction to farmers in 2014 telling them to use human faeces with animal waste and organic compost on their fields. With a lack of livestock to provide animal fertilizer, agriculturists poured the human excrement, also known as “night soil”, on their fields.

Kim’s pronouncement further precipitated the falsehood in North Korea that human waste was the best fertilizer for crops despite the dangerous parasites and worms found within in it, Reuters reported.

The nutrition and widespread health problems that blight North Korea have been highlighted by one North Korean soldier who has recently defected to the south. The army sergeant was found to have dozens of flesh colored parasites in his digestive tract, one of which measured 10.6 inches in length.

“I have a years supply of homegrown garlic, so I don’t have to depend on the crap from China.”

We live less than 50 miles from Gilroy, CA, the Garlic Capital of the United States. And yet we see Chinese garlic in our stores. Go figure! The other one that really got to me is when I found out that “grated Parmesan cheese” ( Like Kraft and other domestic producers) contains wood by-products as “fillers. So now we buy a chunk of the cheese and grate it ourselves. It's like George Carlin said years ago, "There are no lemons in lemonade today because they are hard at work in the furniture polish!"

I don't think so. N. Koreans are going a lot further than countries you mentioned. The problem is compounded by lack of chemical fertilizers and shortage of cooking fuel. The collapsed public health system cannot deal with parasites either.

Kim Jong-un's policy is a disastrous way to deal with fertilizer shortage. You don't have to be an expert to see that the number of parasite carriers will go up.

It is not the use of human feces, but the extent of it coupled with shortage of cooking fuel and collapsed public health system. What can be contained is probably out of control.

I lived in Taiwan in the early 60's when my dad was stationed there. It was referred to as "night soil" in those days.

From Kraft’s label ingredients:

Cellulose Powder = Wood by products.

Kim Jong Un is a rat bastard but using “night soil” or shit to fertilize crops is an age-old practice in Asia. I read a book by the first ambassador to Japan after World War II who was the son of missionaries in prewar Japan. While he was growing up in Japan he told how he and his brother had to be dewormed monthly and that the Japanese population suffered from many food-borne parasites. One story that stuck out for me was about his brother freaking out when the worms, trying to do escape the de-worming medication started crawling up his throat and into his mouth.

When I was a kid my father was in the navy and we were based on a joint US Naval Air Station/French Foreign Legion base at Port Lyautey/Kenitra, Morocco.

We had a base commissary, but fresh produce was purchased at the marche’ off base.

Moroccans also used night soil, so all produce had to washed in bleach water before consumed, in order to avoid the complications the North Korean defector exhibited.

This is somewhat off-topic, but when I was lurking FR in 2011, there was an article (which was actually posted by you, FRiend) covering Kim Jong-il's funeral. The article mentioned that footage of mourners showed a little boy wearing a NY Yankees ski cap.

In what remains (for me) THE greatest mockery of how this nation lies to its people and the world to cover up the human wreckage and suffering in NK,a Freeper satirized:

Kim Jong Ill Sr. pitched a perfect game against the ‘27 Yankees. No one on the Yankees hit the ball. 27 batters, 27 strike outs on 81 pitches. Kim hit 4 grand slams. Final score 16 to 0.

Whenever I read about NK being "outed," I think of this quote.

“Ingredients: Ingredients: Parmesan Cheese (Pasteurized Part-Skim Milk, Cheese Culture, Salt, Enzymes), Cellulose Powder to Prevent Caking, Potassium Sorbate to Protect Flavor.

Cellulose Powder = Wood by products.”

And you will recall that ingredients are listed in the order of their percentage of the product. Cellulose powder is still #2, so they can get away with calling it “grated cheese.”

The use of it is nothing new, and had been going on before Kim's new directive. Going full steam with night soils would worsen the problem severely. All Asian countries are now producing more chemical fertilizers for farming, but N. Korea, instead of doing the same, is going backwards. Because Kim would rather pour money into missiles and nukes than dealing with serious public health problem. The shortage of chemical fertilizers are the result of their chronic power shortage.

They are back to pre-industrial level of parasite infection. If you compare N. Korea with some other countries several decades ago, N. Korea would be worse but not by much. However, in this age, the country stands out as a singular example of public health disaster.

This does not mean that we should send aids to help deal with the problem, because we are just encouraging N. Korea's tyrannical behavior, creating moral hazard. They create problems and we clean them up, while allowing them to freely pursue their WMD programs.

From the Wikipedia article on Night soil:

Night soil is a euphemism for human feces collected at night from cesspools, privies, etc. and sometimes used as a fertilizer. Another definition is "untreated excreta transported without water (e.g. via containers or buckets)".[1] The term "night soil" is more and more seen as a historical one, and is being replaced by "fecal sludge" and "fecal sludge management" which is an ongoing challenge to this day, particularly in developing countries.[2]
