President Trumps pick to head up the military health system lunged into the U.S. gun debate Tuesday during a Senate hearing, saying laws allowing civilians to purchase long guns like the Texas church shooter are insane.
Dean Winslow, a professor at Stanford University, offered up the assessment, seemingly unprompted, amid questions from Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., about the militarys treatment of domestic violence convictions during his nomination hearing to be assistant secretary of defense for health affairs.
Shaheen asked specifically whether Winslow believed a person such as Devin Patrick Kelley, who was jailed by the military for assaulting his wife and stepson, should have received a dishonorable discharge instead of the lesser bad conduct discharge.
Winslow at first pointed to what he called a single point of failure, apparently referring to the Air Forces mistake of not reporting Kelleys crime to civilian authorities, which allowed him to purchase guns. But then he went further.
Id also like to, and I may get in trouble with other members of the committee, just say how insane it is that in the United States of America a civilian can go out and buy a semi-automatic assault rifle like an AR-15, which apparently was the weapon that was used, Winslow said. Kelley reportedly used a Ruger AR-556, which is similar in style to an AR-15.
Also during the hearing, Winslow was pressed by Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., the Armed Services chairman, to explain a reference in Winslows written answers to the committee about providing abortions to military women.
I also believe that therapeutic abortion services should be provided by the military in appropriately staffed facilities, Winslow wrote in the submitted questionnaire.
McCain read the quote and ask pointedly, What do you mean by that?
Winslow said he was glad for the opportunity to clarify his response and that he understands the military has long been barred by law from providing abortions in most cases.
Therapeutic abortions refer to situations in which the mothers life is in danger, Winslow said.
You better clean it up doctor or you are going to have trouble getting it through the Senate, McCain warned.
Pull his nomination.
This guy is stupid.......................
Another virtue signaling academic asshole. Thanks for your service. Now beat it.
It’s insane you are allowed to roam free...
The last thing you need in the highest circles of your administration is a nutty professor.....this one from Stanford University (in the great state of Californicate) !

Automatic disqualification
Trump failed on this one. The basic rule on nominating anyone for any government post is...1) The word “Professor” anywhere in any job title currently or previously held by the projected nominee is an automatic disqualifier for the position.
Some of Trump’s picks are baffling. Why aren’t these people vetted to ensure they agree with his platform? It’s simple enough. Give them a checklist of what Trump ran on and believes. If they agree with it and are qualified, appoint them. If they don’t agree with it, adios. We’re draining, not filling the swamp. Let’s hope the Senate Republicans block this guy. However, I will bet this is the one time they won’t oppose Trump.
And by the way Winslow...The guy was stopped by a semi.
Funny, coming from a retired Air Force Colonel. It was the incompetence of the Airforce that allowed that scumbag to have guns in the first place.
Tell us again how great the government is jerkoff.
Whatever the gooberment agent can own a citizen should be able to own.
Next...
“Tump keeps picking winners”
Sure would like 2 know who the heck is advising him re these appointments !
Soros?
Pretty much, No matter who HE picks its NEVER his fault...
Sessions? Not his fault...
This dud? Not his fault...
I love Trump and voted for him, and would do so again, but there are some real serious let downs here...
Well, yes. But just what exactly is an “assault” rifle as compared to one that is not? The military has “assault” rifles. Civilians have semi-automatic rifles that have similar accessories and appearance, but are not “assault”.
It is this confused thinking and focus on appearances that lead to the so-called ban on “assault” weapons where a rifle with a threaded barrel and a bayonet adapter was illegal but one without the adapter or threaded barrel was perfectly legal. As if too many inner city blacks in Chicago were bayoneted each weekend. Or killed by the 40mm grenades that can be launched from a real “assault” weapon.
It is also such confused thinking that thinks a 7mm Remington Mag with a nice walnut stock to be acceptable but an AR15 with a flash suppressor to be scarey. People who evaluate reality on this basis are scary to me.
Did he ever mention Assault trucks, SUVs. propane tanks, Pressure cookers, Etc.?
Is he saying a person like Stephen Willeford has no right to possess his weapon of choice.
The US government screwed the pooch in not tagging, the shooter!
How long before we hear from Bowe Bergdaul? Can he purchase a gun today?
