SUTHERLAND SPRINGS -- Just days before the killer opened fire killing 26 church goers he walked among them.
Five days before he would gun dozens of people down, Devin Patrick Kelley showed up at the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs with his children for an annual fall festival. His appearance was unexpected because of the past family troubles, but people who saw him there thought it was a sign he was turning a corner.
"And they thought, 'oh this is good. This is progress,'" said Tambria Read, a longtime resident of Sutherland Springs who is good friends with Kelley's mother-in-law, the woman Kelley is said to have been targeting on Sunday but was not at church that morning.
The mother-in-law, Michelle Shields told Read she was so excited to see Kelley there voluntarily with her grandchildren.
Read said people in the church and the community saw a potential to help Kelley.
"This church is very loving, nonjudgmental and if he had had concerns or issues and spoken with the clergy -- they're nonjudgmental," Read said in an interview just two blocks from where Kelley killed 26 and wounded at least another 20 people including children as young as 18 months old. "They would have helped him deal with his issues and helped him try to get focused."
On the church's Facebook page, more than 40 photos from the event show children in costumes playing games.

Have they interviewed the mother of those children yet?
I’m not hearing much from his family.
Most likely though, any family member are still in shock, as I too would be.
How different this case is from the Las Vegas shooter. With the Las Vega case, the surviving brother gave lengthy on air interviews and could not shut up until he was jailed for child porn possession.
Just damned sickening.
I’m really disappointed in My Home State of Texas for letting this happen. Almost everyone I know Carries and could have stopped this scumbag. I just can’t wrap My head around that NOBODY IN THAT CHURCH WAS PREPARED FOR THE WORST. It just makes no sense.

Reminded me of something else I read yesterday.
As we know - this church videotaped services and uplinked them to youtube. Every Sunday.
Officials found the tape of Sunday’s services as services started. And as the massacre began. I do not know how long the tape was rolling, or how many minutes it recorded this horrific event.
But can you imagine?? I pray for the mental and emotional stability of officials who have had to watch that video for clues and evidence.
Speaking for myself, that would cause PTSD.
He kept yacking to obfuscate the situation, just like The damned politicians.
Think it was another Brother from Southern Ca, that did the porn, but the one who did the interviews was a wack also.

I’m going over our church’s current situation and revisit our preparations this week.

Much like the San Bernardino Muslims that murdered their co-workers just days after they threw them a baby shower.
He was pure evil and had been for some time. If you fracture a child’s skull, you most certainly should be in prison for more than one year. Infuriating.
the camera was probably at the back of the church so the murder spree would be videotaped close to where the murderer came in and would be almost what he saw as he shot the victims...plus from his back as he passed into view...

Two different brothers. The one doing interviews lives in Florida. The porn brother lives in California.

Doubtful. CCW in church is great, and is very useful in many scenarios and cases. But regaining the initiative from some guy opening up by surprise from behind with an AR is -very- tough. Ushers up front, or a locked door might have given someone a few seconds to get ready for him.
We all like to say what you did, but the truth is you could have had the pews filled with Navy seals with concealed Glocks, and the outcome wouldn’t have been drastically different if someone steps in the backdoor and hits them with a volley of rifle fire in the middle of a peaceful moment.
More or less, they were taken by ambush in a room with no cover and very hard to flee from.
The Las Vegas event has nothing in common thus far with the Texas one beyond the fact that firearms were used. From what I read, it was an assassination attempt on some Saud Prince or so. There’s an account of here on FR on other threads. It made far more sense.
This guy was just a nut job on the loose.
My sister lives in Texas, and they always have armed church members at their services.
