The research clearly shows that spanking is related to an increased likelihood of many poor health, social and developmental outcomes. These poor outcomes include mental health problems, substance use, suicide attempts and physical health conditions along with developmental, behavioural, social and cognitive problems. Equally important, there are no research studies showing that spanking is beneficial for children.
Those who say spanking is safe for a child if done in a specific way are, it would seem, simply expressing opinions. And these opinions are not supported by scientific evidence.

Because we clearly need more nut bag crazed shooters going bat shit crazy and committing mass killings in America! Let us continue to raise out of control children and deal with them later when it is to late!
Punishment from a position of love can never be wrong. Punishment out of anger is always wrong. Our job as parents is to raise decent, law abiding, loving future adults; if you can do it without punishment all the better but very few kids fall into that category.
In most families, it will be used rarely. But to remove it as an option opens the possibility of open-ended misbehavior in some children. In my opinion.
Concur. A strong willed child requires discipline to get their immediate attention and reinforce the notion of consequences if one violates the law.
The immediacy of a spanking delivers the board of education to the seat of knowledge.
And there’s the obvious. After several decades of the intensified push against traditional family structure and practices, the psychopathic super-predators have begun to appear more frequently. Their families were upper-middle-class, and they did not have masculine fathers present in their upbringing.
Agreed. I spanked my son once when he was small. It hurt me more than him but he obeyed me then. Spanking has to be done without emotion on the parents’ part (other than the regret that it has to be done) or else it could turn into something damaging. Some children may need more spanking. Some may need less, but it’s an effective tool to teach a child that there are real boundaries in life. Better a spanking at 5 than jail at 15.
I was an extremely well-behaved child, never got punished or did anything to deserve it. The parents have nothing against it though. I understand they rarely got punished either, but they were boomers and rarely got caught.
Gods blessings to your family and prayers for your sons. Im just finishing a 31 year Air Force career myself.
Successful, accomplished, devout, Christ-honoring children here. 4 for 4. Spanked....
There’s my research.
They had a very young baby, just beginning to be able to focus.
My buddy's wife was holding the baby, and her gold chain or earrings would grab the baby's attention and he would grab toward them.
My buddy's wife would give a flick of her finger an the childs hand.
The baby would scrunch its face at the discomfort and then a few seconds later, remember the jewelry and grab for it again.
Again with the finger flick. Again with the scrunched face.
After a few more time, the baby learned that grabbing for the jewelry was uncomfortable.
My buddy and his wife were of the mindset, that if you start discipline early enough, you'll stop enough of the small things, that they will never lead to bigger things.
More flicks on the hand when they are young, mean less spankings on the bottom when they are older.
Years later, sitting in church with them, when their numbers had swelled to about 6-7 kids. We were sitting in church. I... hadn't noticed, but my buddy did, that 2 or 3 kids were a little to loud or squirmy for his liking. A slow lean forward and look over... INSTANTLY stopped the behavior, I had failed to notice.
Discipline... proper DISCIPLINE, not necessarily spankings (but could be), made it so that PUNISHMENT wasn't needed much later in life.
Today they have 10 kids.
10 very well behaved kids.
From 2 to 22.
The 3 oldest, 18, 20 and 22, still call me Uncle Dave, though they no longer have to.
“These poor outcomes include mental health problems, substance use, suicide attempts and physical health conditions along with developmental, behavioural, social and cognitive problems.”
So spanking is like global warming, it has bad effects on EVERYTHING but not a single positive. How did humanity survive thousands of years of spanking before the EuroPeons showed us the error of our ways?
We never got the belt, all Dad had to do was act like he was unbuckling it.
I am also for spanking adults
Discipline and punishment.
Discipline: the practice of training people to obey rules or a code of behavior, using punishment to correct disobedience.
Punishment: the infliction or imposition of a penalty as retribution for an offense.
Seldom were spankings the lone "punishment" for me.
Often they were the softening up exercise.
The "attention getter".
Granted, the spanking hurt and was part of the punishment, but it MADE me sit in my chair in the corner, until I was told to leave it.
Goodness, were you and I in the same family?
Exactly the same experience (but with five kids, not six).
Thanks for your OPINION.
But its WRONG.
“I do child abuse work and spanking is wrong. Period.”
I’m not surprised that someone in your line of work would come to that conclusion. You see the worst examples of parenting and probably many of the abusers hit their children. You see them BECAUSE they have failed at parenting. What you dont see are the millions of parents who spanked (not abused) their kids as a means of correcting bad behavior and got good results.
This from the “No Consequences” crowd.
Spanking is the first and best way for a child to learn about consequences.
Our culture today makes clear we have a generation unfamiliar with consequences.
