President Donald Trumps Mar-a-Lago resort has been granted 70 visas to bring in foreign workers for the winter season, The Palm Beach Post reports.
Thats a 9 percent increase from last year, when Mar-a-Lago hired 64 workers under the H-2B visa program. The new visas will go to 20 foreign cooks, 35 waiters and 15 maids and housekeepers for the 2017-18 tourist season, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Theyll earn hourly wages from $10.33 (for the cleaners) to $13.34 (for the cooks). The temporary visas allow them to work from October 2017 to the end of May 2018.
A hallmark of Trumps presidential campaign and a stated push of his administration is that U.S. companies should hire American workers. He has criticized Ford Motor Company, Carrier Corp. and others for moving manufacturing jobs to Mexico. Mar-a-Lago was applying for the foreign worker visas this July when the president launched Made in America Week.
Trump said at the time, We believe jobs must be offered to American workers first. Does that make sense?

I spent my working years in general construction. Years ago, big commercial landscapers used to have Visa programs where they brought in summer workers for five months year after year. They vetted them for skill set and work habits, they paid them well compared to crop workers and they had a savings program and helped them with savings.
One company I used had guys or gals that had come for ten years and his company had a program in one Mexican hometown to help the income there during the off season.
All of those programs died when Clinton and Bush started ignoring the border and millions of illegals crossed at all times of the year.
It killed legal visa worker programs and it killed minority subcontracting in the US for blacks who now competed with improperly paid illegals in fields like drywall, painting, plaster, masonry and the like.
It is great we have seasonal work and enough employed that a visa program might be needed when kids are in school.
Assume EVERYTHING you read from the dinosaur media is designed to undermine your faith in our institutions and you’ll never be mislead.
Up in Maine British and Euro teens and college students make the jump across the pond to make beds and bus tables and all the chi chi hotels and restaurant’s for the summer.
Tell me, who was replaced by a seasonal worker?

A U.S. career employee.
Tell me, who was replaced by a seasonal worker?
A U.S. employee who would be willing to work the job for a higher wage.
My point. None, none, and none.
Well, we all know that business owners just sit on piles of cash rather than paying their employees what they are worth. /s
Line cooks are trained on the job so its a beginning position-no experience required. The people who traditionally take those positions seem to find it easier to live off welfare or mom and dads money. Even fast food places here are offering hiring bonuses. Adding in that the resort in this story is seasonal and the season isnt summer makes staffing harder.
The reality is that hospitality is a tough industry. People expect perfection every time, but are willing to pay only so much. It takes a certain kind of person to work in food service and there are only so many of us out there.
Not replaced, as the position was not previously filled. Let's be precise when comparing and contrasting H-1B and H-2B workers.
As to the "willing to work the job" part, I would hope that is true, but we're talking about South Florida in the "Season" here. We are talking about the period from December to April when snowbirds from the northeast come to Florida for the winter. Increasingly since the transformation of South Beach in the 1990s, the area has also become a playground for the European "rich."
Moving past the whole Thanksgiving-Chistmas-New Year-Super Bowl claim on Americans' time, how many people in West Palm Beach who don't already have hospitality jobs would be willing to give them up for a seasonal short-time position? For people who are currently unemployed in West Palm Beach, how many: 1) want a temp job, and 2) are qualified off their couch to work in a 5-star luxury resort? If they are qualified, why aren't they working now on Florida's Gold Coast?

And since the applicant gets to stay as long as the Green Card app. is pending. They can stay after their visa expires.
We have always had guest worker programs for seasonal jobs. Its a totally different scenario from the mass importation of thousands of semi permanent foreigners mostly Indian to take high paying tech jobs that American workers are being passed by or laid off from.
$10.50 per hour for a temp hotel maid job is about standard. If Trump has trouble filling those slots there is nothing wrong with bringing in guest workers.
Let’s keep our eye on the real problem which is the H1B program.
Workfare...or homeless and hungry.
What do you think Wendy’s pays? Slinging burgers is about the same skill level as making beds and emptying trash cans. It don’t pay much.
“And Disney is a good example for our purposes. Yes, they outsourced their IT function......So why is one situation - sending work offshore - bad and the other situation - bring workers here - good?”
Any net loss is bad, but since the Disney jobs no longer exist that would make that undeniably worse than jobs that exist.
As far as American workers are concerned they don't exist in either case.
Only be degrees. In both cases it's workers brought in because they don't want to pay U.S. workers what they are worth.

$13.34 for a chef in a upper-scale establishment is not. I would bet that servers in high-end restaurants and resorts make more than $10.33 as well. Mar-a-Lago is bringing people in to keep salaries low and costs down. Why is that OK for chefs and not for programmers?
Not all H-1Bs replace existing U.S. workers, let's be precise on that as well.

So? Offer enough and people will overlook the temporary nature and be more than willing to fill the position. The H-2B exists to keep salaries down. No other reason.
Visas? That would br LEGAL immigrants?
A lot do.
Line cooks are trained on the job so its a beginning position-no experience required.
You really think that's what Mar-a-Lago is doing here? Bringing in untrained foreigners and paying them to learn on the job? I highly doubt it.
The people who traditionally take those positions seem to find it easier to live off welfare or mom and dads money.
Your contempt for U.S. workers is duly noted.
People expect perfection every time, but are willing to pay only so much.
Sounds like that same description can be applied to your employers too.
Yes, as I pointed out in my reply 13.
