At least six people were killed and 15 were injured when a truck driver deliberately mowed down people in lower Manhattan Tuesday afternoon, officials tell News 4 New York.
Sources initially said they were responding to a report of at least five people shot near West and Chambers streets in Tribeca, but officials say their investigation now shows the injuries may have come from the truck crash. Police sources tell News 4 that a box truck driver was traveling the wrong way down a bicycle path, injuring several people. The box truck then collided with a Home Deport rental truck, and the box truck driver got out with what now appears to be a fake firearm. He was then shot by police. He's in custody.
A box truck driver zoomed the wrong way down a bicycle path, mowing down several people, sources say. The driver then got out with what appeared to be firearms.
Witnesses told News 4 they saw the driver running around with the apparent guns.
He was then shot by police, according to sources. He's in custody, police say.
Students from the top-ranked Stuyvesant High School and other witnesses in the area tweeted that they'd heard gunshots. A message has been left with the Department of Education.
A large number of police vehicles could be seen near West Street and Chambers Street in Tribeca, which is near a community college, Stuyvesant High School, and a few blocks north of the National Sept. 11 Memorial.
According to audio recorded by the service Broadcastify, the NYPD cleared the area around the truck to bring in bomb squads shortly after the violent episode.
Box truck on Chambers and West, we need that area cleared, said one officer. We need everybody away from that truck.
Both Mayor de Blasio and Gov. Cuomo were headed to the scene.

You can’t have guns in NYC. It’s against the law.
I'm not trying to be funny, but does the direction of travel even matter for a box truck driving on a bicycle path? WTF?
I’m listening to ABC radio right now. Tons of blah blah, but NO physical description of shooter. Makes me think it must be Muzzlime or black or a black Muzzlime. Nothing like libtard trash making EVERYTHING PC.
bbgun and paint(?) gun?
Both mayor deblasio and governor cuomo were headed to the scene of their making.
It is a muslim. He was yelling allu akbar.
Fox reporting the guy was hollering ala akbar.
Someone then said just because the guy was hollering ala ackbar doesn’t mean it was an act of terror...
Huh?!
It’s pertinent, in that the fact he was going the wrong way makes it automatically deliberate................
No, no , no, he was just asking directions to the Aloha Snack Bar!.................
Twas a rented truck.......................
Perp was screaming Allah Akbar..so there ya go..he wasn’t screaming Go Dodgers..now we wait for the perps name to be released
It’s true..I say Allah Akbar all the time, I turn on my PC in the morning and say “Allah Akbar” /sarc
Have they called it and AK-1547 yet?............
Abdul? Mohammad?
The bike path is like five feet wide in each direction. The truck would have been hitting people in both lanes even if it was driving in the “right” direction.
Suicide by cop- FAIL.
Aloha Snack bar...confirmed.
