JUST FOR TODAY

As I go through some "troubles" in my own life, I've worked out this "formula" to help me be a useful and happy person. See if it doesn't work for you!

JUST FOR TODAY: I will try to live through this day only, and not tackle my whole life problem at once.

JUST FOR TODAY: I will be happy. I will assume to be true what Abraham Lincoln said: "Most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be".

JUST FOR TODAY: I will try to strengthen my mind. I will study. I will learn something useful. I will read something that requires effort, thought, and concentration.

JUST FOR TODAY: I will adjust myself to what is, and not try to adjust everything to my own desires.

JUST FOR TODAY: I will exercise my soul in three ways: I will do somebody a good turn, and not get found out. I will do at least two things I don't want to do just for exercise. I will not show anyone that my feelings are hurt; they may be hurt, but today I will not show it.

JUST FOR TODAY: I will be agreeable. I will look as well as I can, dress becomingly, talk low, act courteously, criticize not one bit, not find fault with anything, and not try to improve or regulate anybody but myself.

JUST FOR TODAY: I will have a program. I may not follow it exactly, but I will have lt. I will save myself from two pests: hurry and indecision.

JUST FOR TODAY: I will have a quiet half hour all by myself. During this half hour, I will try and get a better perspective of my life.

JUST FOR TODAY: I will be unafraid. Especially I will not be afraid to enjoy what is beautiful, and to believe that as I give to the world, so the world will give back to me.

CAPT Benny Hornsby, CHC, USN (Ret)

Hi Kathy!

((((HUGS))))

One of the meats that had to be cooked was a rack of pork ribs. I cut them into separate ribs, put them in the crock pot and added half a jar of pineapple salsa, some Carolina Mustard BBQ Sauce, and some rubbing spice. Then I let it slow cook for five hours.

I had half the rack for lunch yesterday and half today. I have NEVER tasted such amazing ribs in my whole life!

Tomorrow I will tackle the stew beef, which I cooked in the other slow cooker with a can of diced tomatoes, dried Jalapeno peppers, and Indian Tikka Marsala Sauce. I will probably pour some of that over rice or noodles.

The ground beef was made into a Mexican-Style meat Loaf, using chili beans and a collection of Mexican Spices i brought back from Florida. that came out good too.

This morning, Penny and I solved a Mystery Trail that wound off the wider trail that we normally hike. This one went through a much more wooded area, and involved crossing streams on a log. (Penny just walked through the water LOL!) The trail ended up on the old Rockland Railroad Trail and back around to the Hanover trail where we had started earlier, by a 200 year old family cemetery (complete with the spooky slate headstones) and a golden, dappled forest trail back to the car. Some elevation up and down, but still easy enough for me and Penny.

AND, I got to ride Blue later in the day!

No open mike tonight, but I hit a few yard sales and got a sailor costume for Halloween Gig, which is also my B-I-L’s birthday party.

Here's the best way to describe my yearly flying:

Flight hours are limited to 30 hours in 7 days, 100 hours in a month and 1000 in a year. Scheduling rules also say I need at least 1 day off a week, so 6 day trips are the max for me (121 US domestic scheduled).

Let's look at a typical trip, which at my company tended to be a 4 day trip. You want good productive trips, but you can't always get them. On a 4 day trip let's say I have 6 hours of flight scheduled each day, or 24 hours scheduled that week. I am getting paid the better of 24 hours or the actual flight time. Now let's look at my duty day. For a 6 hour day with 4 legs it was not unheard of to have a 12 hour duty day. So now for a 4 day trip, I'm "at work" 48 hours and being paid for half of that. Now consider that I'm not going home every night and my trip starts at 6 am on Friday and ends at midnight Monday night -- that totals to 90 hours away from home.

How does this compare to a 40 hour work week in an office? In that case you are on duty 40 hours, getting paid 40 hours (or salary) and if you have a 1 hour commute one way, you are spending 50 hours away from home.

Back to the flight schedule. A given month will have trips less productive than 24 hours and although you can probably build a 96 hour month if you tried, the average line of flying is typically going to be 75 hours of flying. You can ballpark that will equate to 150 duty hours and 300 hours away from home for the month.

Extrapolate that to a year, and you have 900 flight hours, 1800 duty hours and 3600 hours away from home. I would say this represents the average US domestic 121 pilot. Some do more, some do less, but this is pretty typical.

What do we do with all of that duty time that isn't flying? Let's see:

Oh and the legal stuff:

14 CFR 121 contains the legal limit for flight time for airline pilots in the US: (a) No certificate holder conducting domestic operations may schedule any flight crewmember and no flight crewmember may accept an assignment for flight time in scheduled air transportation or in other commercial flying if that crewmember's total flight time in all commercial flying will exceed—
