Wait, 90% of 43% means that fewer then 4 out of 10 Catalans have declared the desire to be independent of Spain. That’s a terrible basis on which to found a country. I don’t think they’ve thought this through.

And the senate in Madrid has just voted for activation of paragraph 155 regarding Catalonia. This is not good! Both sides are run by maximalists. Very likely the situation will continue to escalate.

This makes me vaguely uneasy.
If Catalonia breaks away, who will ultimately end up in power there? I have read that there is a sizable migrant population there.
Back in the Middle Ages there was an attempt to conquer Europe by invading Spain across the Straits of Gibraltar. This incursion was eventually thrown back but it took many years to accomplish.
I'm sure I'm not the only one seeing history repeating itself.

Today is Catalan Declaration Of Independence from Spain and the E.U.Wishful thinking. The Catalans want independence from Spain, not from the EU. Most of the Catalan independence advocates want to remain in the EU (even though the EU opposes Catalan independence), albeit as Catalonia rather than as part of Spain. They resent rule by Madrid but not by Brussels, and reject "Spanishness" rather than Globalism. That's why I can't bring myself to be too enthusiastic about their independence movement, any more than I can bring myself to support the anti-London but pro-EU (and pro-immigration) Scottish independence movement.

Many American Conservatives imply the Catalonia independence movement is in sink with American Conservatives disdain for the EU’s excesses and “globalism” in general.
I am thinking that may be a misreading of the politics of Spain and of the politics of Catalonia.
Yes, it is another “centrifugal” force, but I think more of it is unique to Spain and Catalonia than it is joined to the same causes American Conservatives support.
