The Obsession With White Voters Could Cost Democrats the Virginia Governor’s Race
The Nation ^ | October 23, 2017 | By Steve Phillips

Posted on 10/23/2017 12:49:09 PM PDT by Oldeconomybuyer

One simple statistic highlights the folly of much of the Democratic Party’s strategy and spending. If every person of color who voted for Hillary Clinton in Virginia last year turns out to vote in Virginia’s gubernatorial contest on November 7, Democrat Ralph Northam could win without getting a single vote from a white person. Not one. And yet most Democratic strategists and donors overlook and undervalue voters of color in general and African-American voters in particular. As a result, Democrats are at real risk of losing eminently winnable contests in Virginia this year, as well as in myriad races in 2018.

Much of the progressive movement and many progressive campaigns are still dominated by White leadership, fixated on White voters. Since the last presidential election, this pattern has continued unabated with nearly all progressive attention focused on the white working-class voters who supported Trump in large numbers.

For all the analyses offered about the behavior of these voters in 2016, you hear almost nothing about the tactical and strategic decisions that led to the cataclysmic collapse of black-voter turnout.

Many of those funding and running Democratic campaigns have learned little—or, worse, learned the wrong lessons—about how to win in a racially combustible environment. Nationally, voters of color remain the cornerstone of a winning electoral coalition. In Virginia, Democrats don’t need any white votes (fortunately, there are at least 900,000 reliably Democratic white voters, making the math easier). But unless they enthusiastically embrace, engage, and invest in the communities of color, they run the risk of again losing elections they should win, in Virginia this year, across the country in 2018, and, God forbid, in the 2020 presidential race.

So in the alternate reality magical thinking cartoon world of the hate whitey democrats, they don’t think they even need white votes anymore? Awesome. This just gets more entertaining in a morbidly fascinating way. Maybe they’ll decide voting is too white, as things like math, science, reading and thinking are to them now.

They want to throw out civilized man and go back to savagery, apparently, based on all thier recent behavior. If it comes down to brains vs. neanderthal in the end, the Dindunuffins will be mighty disappointed.

A lot of us are refusing to check the white box on government forms these days anyway. It is like checking the “Jew” box in Germany, circa 1935.

He obviously needs to go back to school and study percentages...although I’ve been reading, and apparently math is the domain of white supremacists.

[Note: Are ANY whites NOT white supremacists? From what I’ve read, it is 100%. Just ask Jesse Jackson.]

Isn’t The Nation one of the voices of U.S. communists? Do they really think that POC in Virginia are really going to stay home in droves, or even less likely, vote R? It’s misdirection.

“In Virginia...there are at least 900,000 reliably Democratic white voters...”

And the Democrat race-baiters are working hard to alienate the remaining white Dem voters.

“So what is this imbecile saying? That Democrats no longer need or want a coalition that includes white people? “

I think what he was saying is, hey, let’s distribute a bunch of that cash to blacks. I am assuming that all those Leftist get-out-the-black-vote organizations he mentioned are not run by whites. And, he’s complaining they gave money to an advertising firm that has an all white board? Seriously? He’s an affirmative action guy. (By-the-way, do any of those black vote getter companies have a white on their board? I’ll bet not.)

Absolute nonsense! Democrats totally pander to blacks. If black voters wised up and changed their voting from 90%+ Democrat down to 80% Democrat the Democrats would never win another election.

He is making the observation that turnout for gubernatorial elections is much lower than that for presidential elections.

I would think it would be easier to attract white voters than it would be to boost turnout by 70%.

Relying only on minorities and always dem liberal whites leaves them little margin for error. Ignoring malleable white swing voters would be foolish. Whites are still a majority and after majority comes plurality ie still more than any other group. Ignoring the largest group of voters is unsound strategy.

I don’t buy that Shillery didn’t do all she could to get Blacks to turn out in November, she certainly did in the primary and that’s the only reason she beat Bernie. Where was her final rally? Philly. It’s just that Blacks won’t turn out the same way for a chalk white honkey like her as they did for Obama, which was to be expected.

As for VP candidates, who was available? Corey Booker? Deval Patrick? Not great choices and who’s the say putting a brother in One Observatory Circle would have been a motivating factor for any voter after 8 years of a Black guy in the White House? A Hispanic choice certainly wouldn’t have effected Black turnout either.

There’s no magic formula to get idiots who only vote for President to show up in an off year, as if both sides haven’t already been trying to.

There’s no reason btw a rat candidate can’t try to appeal to gullible Whites while also shilling for thugs to gin up Black turnout. False dichotomy.

Steve is also an amateure when it comes to getting elected. This is exactly the mistake Hillary's campaign staff made, calculating carefully what percentage of the identity-politics groups they needed to carry to get elected, and discarding anyone who didn't fit that mold. They got killed for it.

You need every vote. Every one. And if you decide to scapegoat any group you lose. Hillary's people told her that offending the coal miners was safe enough because, you know, how many coal miners are there? That everyone in every related industry, steel workers, oil workers, auto workers, that they all knew perfectly well that disdain applied to them as well didn't register until election day, when it did, fatally. That it bled over into other demographics, their wives, and cut into her women's vote, didn't register either, and now we are treated to learned theses stating that those women were too dumb to understand their true interests. Yes, they did, and they voted them.

And so, in a state that's 62% white, the Dems don't need the white vote. Right. Work off that assumption and we'll be reading more gloomy postmortems on the order of "What Happened" and laughing.

Does this explained why Obama totally ignored white people (except those who are homosexual) for 8 years?

The moronic article writer who seems to think that the magic fates of history would not be bothered to come true again, he would be accurate.

In off-year elections, the voter turn out is a fraction of what it is on a regular election cycle.

My party had a candidate running for an office in Raleigh this month. The district he’s in literally, during the 2016 primary had 3 times the voter total that the general election in 2017 had. It is a sad state.

So, we go on to Virginia. He’s right. If every single non-white voter that voted in 2016 voted for the Dem in 2017, mathematically, he would probably be accurate. The problem he has is that probably less than 1/6th of that group will actually vote. It’s a stupid statement designed to allow him to say something stupid and then when you challenge him on it, he can claim he’s accurate. The problem he has is that there are a high percentage of non-whites that voted for Trump compared to Romney or McLame.

Let’s not fall for his stupidity.

Which census? VA now has heavy Hispanic and Asian populations and increasing Muslim population (tho they may be considered ‘white’ for census purposes)
