HALIFAXThe skies have been brilliant blue in Nova Scotia wine country this October, the vines heavy with grapes, and winemakers such as Sean Sears are seeing crops they could only vaguely hope for in the past.
Amid the havoc wrought elsewhere by global warming, Annapolis Valley vineyards have flourished as temperatures have moderated.
If this trend continues well be sitting in one of the great wine regions, Sears says in an interview.
Sears says his Petite Riviere vineyard has already clipped fruit with sucrose counts higher than anything his plants have produced in his memory, while the skin, seeds and flesh are ripened to ideal levels for the wines he will create.
Global warming is proving to be both blessing and curse for the wine industry, with some traditional regions like California coping with wildfires and premature harvests, and even France seeing centuries-old patterns of grape growing disrupted by freak frosts.
Francisco Diez came to Nova Scotia in December and, as the viticulture specialist at the provincial development agency Perennia, has started studying possible new grapes for cultivation in the province.
With the weather warmer than before, and winter not so cold, its allowed varieties that couldnt be grown before, including riesling, chardonnay and pinot noir. It is a surprise, said the scientist, who grew up in Chile.
Im kind of pessimistic by nature, he said.
Still, with hurricane season almost over and pleasantly warm ocean breezes flowing over the fields, the winemaker concedes the growing season was just about ideal.
Were all quietly smiling, he said.

Every time I see a post with “global warming” in the title, I skip the article but immediately look below for the photo of Goebbels. That tells me all I need to know about this utter hoax.
—gee whiz—maybe like in the 1100’s when Leif Ericson was there?
Yeah, global warming schwarming. The Vikings enjoyed the wine grapes of Vinland until global cooling ran them back to Europe. Don’t these idiots ever pick up history or geology books?
Once again, a statistically normal warm, dry year, which has given this guy a good vintage, is being extrapolated to being yet another sign of the Cult of Mother Gaia’s grand plan for the planet.
Just as they flourished about 500 years ago, and will again in another 500 or so years...
And Greenland used to be just that...
With large working farms and fields for livestock.
Then global cooling happened...
And the article glosses over the fact that this is an existing vineyard that has been there for years. They are just claiming a higher sugar content or some such.
History? We doan need no steenkin’ history!!
8-10 years of moderating temps do not mean they will not lose every vine in the next harsh winter.
Short answer: no.
Currently, grapes are grown on one side of the Mosel River, the side that gets the most sunshine daily. With global warming, both sides of the Mosel would be planted, and I would be a happy man.
Make that, happier.
...and Mother Gaia didn’t start the fires in Napa. It was a damn illegal worker if the reporting is correct. Sheesh, and SMDH.
Wow!
They are up to 800 acres of grapes now!
In CA there are areas that even in a plane at 5,000 feet you cannot see the end of the vineyards.
Millions of acres.
We’re not worried yet:)
I wonder how the vineyards in Ohio, along Lake Erie did this year?
Well, here’s to hoping they did well.
The Vikings called it ‘Vineland’...................1000 years ago!....................
Wasn’t that area called “Vineland” in the first place? Lief Erikson? So many grapes were growing there?
Watch what happens when all those vineyards rip out their vines and replace them with warmer climate varieties thinking this is a permanent, long-term change.
So...Vinland is named for the grapes vines the Vikings found...either Nova Scotia or New England. Connecticut has wineries and it is thriving...another fake news about Globull Warming...
