Tufts University students recently complained that the Economics Department focuses too much on “capitalist ideologies” while neglecting to sufficiently demonize President Trump.
In an op-ed for The Tufts Observer titled “Moving Beyond Capitalism," Gabriela Bonfiglio and Kyle Lui assert that there is little intellectual diversity within the department, which they accuse of using lecture-style classes to “subtly” indoctrinate their students in “capitalist ideologies.”

As a contrasting example, they cite the Economics Department at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, which employs “professors who focus on feminism and queerness in their economic research,
UMass Econ is notorious for being filled with Marxist professors. Perhaps that is the reason why the department is not respected in the field.

How much you want to bet not a single one of the current generation of econ graduates could define the difference between “supply and demand” and “quantity supplied and quantity demanded.”
Of course that makes them equal to 99.9999% of all legislators.
Everything the little snowflakes want to “redistribute” is produced by capitalism.

Funny you mention that! I learned that in Engineering Econ in 1971. Ten years later in my MBA econ classes, that distinction wasn’t made. I pointed it out in a paper and the prof that it was brilliant, that I had an excellent grasp of economics. It really bugged me that the difference wasn’t taught in 1981! And I’m not even sure my econ prof understood the difference.
For the billionth time, no one cares what first semester college know-it-alls think! It is ridiculous!!

Personally, I reject the word “capitalism” as a construct straight out of Marx. I prefer the term “free enterprise” because it engages the concept that freedom is central to success in any economic enterprise. Lack of freedom and government control effectively throttle economic vitality. Thus, achieving Marx’s goal of extinguishing “capitalism.”
My first year Property Law professor made it very clear there would be no debating the institution of private property. We were there to learn the law.
Back in the ‘80s I recall hearing of a controversy at the Harvard Econ. Dept., where students wanted some sections of large courses to specialize in “radical economics.” i.e., you take a large lecture course in econ. but the weekly discussion section would focus upon “radical economics.”
At the time, at least, the Harvard econ. dept. said “no, we are here to learn about economics, period.”

Why bother taking an Econ course I you don’t want to realize that Capitalism is the only path to Economic success???
They are probably hoping to be the one that replaces Paul Krugman at the Slimes.

Well, they can learn about Communism in History: Ash Heap Unit.
Those students probably want to see a class that teaches how freedom of speech is bad for people, and where lack of freedoms is preferable.
IOW, a class about how wonderful life is in countries such as N. Korea and Venezuela and Cuba. Tufts University should have their economics class taught in N. Korea or Cuba or Venezuela, with required residency in those countries for at least 2 years.
I use free markets because everybody loves free stuff...
