China has sent an unmistakable signal that Kim Jong-un had better not rely on the historic alliance between China and North Korea to resist President Trump's demands. In fact, as he dallies with his troop of teen sex slaves, he had better keep in mind that Beijing is wondering what it might be like with the Kim dynasty out of the way.
The Chinese way of delivering such a harsh message is to use a third party – preferably one without a policy role, but who clearly speaks for the ruling elite. Someone, for instance, like the dean of international studies at Beijing University (the Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Stanford of China).
Patrick Baert of AFP writes:
Jia Qingguo, dean of the School of International Studies at Peking University, raised eyebrows earlier in September when he published an article entitled: "Time to prepare for the worst in North Korea".
The paper was published in English in East Asia Forum, a website of the Australian National University, but it is unlikely that he could have released it without the approval of Chinese authorities.
Jia urged Beijing to start discussing contingency plans with the United States and South Korea -- talks that the two nations have sought in the past but China has resisted for fear of upsetting Pyongyang.
"When war becomes a real possibility, China must be prepared. And, with this in mind, China must be more willing to consider talks with concerned countries on contingency plans," Jia wrote.
This comparatively mild language is telling KJU that in a war, China might not be on the North Korean side.

Translation...fat little rocket man is a short timer
If the strategic goal of North Korea is to reunite the Koreas, why would they fire rockets over Japan?
If you are China, and North Korea is your puppet, you fire rockets over Japan to keep them worried.
North Korea is China’s puppet.
Not the NORKs but Kim Jong Un as their leader
He has shown extreme disrespect to China
He is replaceable
You nailed it. NK is China’s junkyard dog and they let it off leash to terrorize the neighbors.
There is no place for a evil, freak nation like North Korea in the 21st century. North Korea must cease to exist.
Soon Rocket Man’s supporters will be down to the Democrats and the media.
Go Trump!
I was hoping China would take our President Trump at his word... and looks like they are. This is what will work... tough talk and determination.. which the past Presidents did not have... and which the media will give no credit to the man who is not afraid to do what is right..
To play chicken with the enemy does absolutely nothing but emboldens them... it never solved a thing.. it just proved the those who tried to feed the snake, will be eaten by the snake.
RE: If you are China, and North Korea is your puppet, you fire rockets over Japan to keep them worried.
And why would China want to do that? Don’t they trade with Japan? Doesn’t Japan have lots of factories in China?
China’s patience is worn to a frazzle with this idiot.
He is endangering their trade and money making............................
I think you have it backwards. Firing missiles over Japan is a form of shakedown. What the Norks want is money. As long as they can keep the Chinese subsidizing them they can stay in power. They keep the cash flowing by keeping the Chinese afraid of what will happen if their regime collapses, or if it provokes a conflict with the US and its allies in the region.
If NK gets A-bombs and missiles, targets in China are a LOT closer than the US.
NK and Russia have cooperated in the past - Remember all those Russian MiGs during the Korean War?
At the same time, and in the same war, divisions of Chinese troops fought alongside the North Koreans.
It's a delicate balancing act Rocket Man is involved in - with Russia, China, South Korea, Japan, USA all vying for his country. If I was to guess, I'd say he survives for now.
This is interesting, North Korea cannot survive without China.
Japan is one external enemy China is using for their Big Lie internal propaganda.
If a man purposely let his mad dog off its leash and my child was mauled and killed the primary target for my rage would be the master, not the dog.
” Firing missiles over Japan is a form of shakedown.”
True, but that is North Korea’s motivation.
For China I’d think they might still be concerned/angry with Japan and not anxious to push the Japanese to further rearm (or heaven forbid actually assemble some of there nuclear weapons).
Also, if China were to see a US action as inevitable then they are faced with an unwelcome set of alternatives: 1) Oppose the US militarily, 2) Drop support for NK, 3) Pressure NK into behaving. Avoid #1, Implement #2 early to maintain credibility, Pursue #3 (what’s to lose?).
